pondering cutting back to internet only - what are the least expensive options?

I currently have Time Warner standard cable (roughly 65 non-digital channels) and regular high speed internet. I pay around $80 a month and it keeps creeping up. I don't watch much of the cable tv and I am thinking about cutting back. I want to keep internet in some form (cable or dsl). I would like to make the occasional torrent download, watch hulu and I have an Ooma for telephone, so moderate download speed would be required.

I am guessing that others in Columbus have made the jump back to ota tv and any suggestions on the best, most cost effective solution would be appreciated!

call time warner and tell them you're broke,you need to cancel

they will knock off some of the bullshit fees that they put on your bill.

i did it,and got my bill lowerred by $10

Or ask for the standard/basic no box cable which has 35 channels and HD channels and is only 15 bucks a month. That is what I have so the bill with High speed Internet is 50 a month.

It seems everyone gets different prices.

Believe it or not I was paying $100 for standard cable (no box) and internet. Yes, shame on me. I called about a year ago and they lowered it (threatened to go to WOW) but it seems a never ending cycle (always creeping up) for something i really don't value that much. I do appreciate the info and yes it seems they will drop it down for awhile. They told me high speed internet only would be around 40 something $.

I am thinking about maybe even going to some form of dry loop dsl, but I do like that TW is no contract.

I've never had cable tv in my life, not even when I was a kid. Now that digital tv exists, with perfect reception and bonus channels, I don't think I ever will.

i am now considerring this,after finding absolutely nothing worth watching on 100 channels.

We get internet for $35/month. Time Warner. We just use Netflix or websites to watch TV. Works for us!~

I also have no cable TV. I've been an internet only customer of TW for about 5 years. I pay $35/month.

A combination of hulu, digital over the air TV(and DVR), and bit torrent keeps me with enough media to watch.

I have the regular Roadrunner cable internet from TW. If you split the coax line running to your modem and send one lead on to the modem and the other to your TV, you will get channels 2-69 for free while still achieving full internet signal.

question... do you already have a blackberry?

if so you can run your internet from your phone. sure it has some disadvantages, but it saves around $20 a month.

i also use the bunny ears instead of cable. only miss adult swim, but from my experience recently it isn't as good as it once was.

Yea I view cable as a luxury so when I did have cable with many channels and there was never anything on I always wondered why I was paying what I was. I called TW and said I just want my local channels to come in good. It included 30 others and the History channel. I don't watch a lot of TV just a few shows. This seemed like it made the most sense for me.

You may also want to try Thorns advice for what I have heard lots of people do that method as well.

If you don't need TV, I recommend DSL ... and I've been on AT&T for more than two years now with basically no problems, except when I moved. They got that fixed in a couple of days and knocked some off my bill for six months afterward to compensate for my trouble.

this is my set-up, but not my pricing. my internet only plan with TW started at 35/month but they keep raising my rates and now it's 50 a month. I'm tempted to scrap them on principle, but I HAAAATE AT&T.

If you can get a good deal on internet, I think it's becoming a waste to pay for even 30 cable stations, let alone 100. Now that you can get the digital channels clear as day for only the cost of the convertor box and antennea (if you TV doesn't have an internal one) having cable is feeling more and more like a waste. Unless, of course, you must keep on top of the latest goings on of the Kardasians. There are so many options for movie/TV watching on the net, then you don't really get much "value added" with the cable. And, while you only get a small number of digital channels for free, you get all the major networks, so when there's something going on that you want to watch live (The Oscars, election night, the next 9-11, etc.) you'll be covered.

I am thinking I live about a mile from a library and a redbox. Combined with hulu I think I'll be fine without the tv. I would have to dig out the government subsidized converter box from the closet though. Glad I got that.

@mercurius
I use the internet for my voip phone (ooma) so I would want to have control of internet access. I also don't think my 75 year old nieghbor lady wants to share her bandwidth :)

Including phone line and 6.0Mbps/768Kbps DSL service, I pay about $42-$44/mo. with the discount. That's going to go up by about $17.50 in a few months.
