"It's the Congress, stupid." It's not the fault of whatever political party happens to be controlling Congress. It's the institution itself that's broken. http://www.fixcongressfirst.org

Starting in the 1930s, government started promising to be more active in making life better for people. More government programs were introduced with the promise that they would take care of us.
Problem is, government is very inefficient and wasteful at doing things. But, with payroll withholding for income taxes, people did not see how much they were paying for all these services.
Time passes and all politicians feel that the way to get reelected is to propose more benefits for the public and to bring more government spending to their districts. Government accounting systems are a mess so no one can get an accurate idea about whether we are getting our money's worth for these services.
So here we are today. Government keeps providing more and more services. We like those services (or at least we think we like those services...we really don't know how well government is actually performing them). The politicians from BOTH parties are promising to take care of us. They are trying to legislate a higher standard of living than our combined work and income can support. Our government is borrowing like crazy to pay for services today...it will never be able to repay those loans. If the current situation continues we will be in for a very unpleasant future.

What percentage of the 75% who are angry will actually do a damn thing about it?

People being angry at the government is good for business. Especially if you're in the news/entertainment business.

What percentage of the 75% who are angry will actually do a damn thing about it?You mean besides the tea party types? Guess the obvious way would be to look at voter participation in the midterm elections...
And I guess Walker added the poll option...I was just being general, but yeah tea party movement could be one form of doing something about it. If they get some real numbers and move beyond some of the revolutionary war reenactment spectacle on the fringes of the movement they may become significant.
I doubt they will become significant. Especially with Sarah Palin speaking at one of the group's conventions, which automatically introduces a social agenda that is polarizing and distracting. It gets the angry, white old people and... that's about it and that is no longer a successful formula on a national scale.
Doing something about it and getting results are two different things.
I would guess that the majority of those angry are angry about jobs and their personal financial situation. To me doing something about it in that context means taking matters into your own hands (entrepreneurship, to me anyhow), rather than waiting on the government or being angry at the government.

anybody not mad about what the US govt is doing in their name with their money and the money of their kids they haven't even had yet probably isn't paying attention
watching one's own country slowly self destruct isn't much fun

The Tea Party movement is still in its beginning state and it needs to develop. Right now it just provides a forum for angry people to vent. Many of those angry people are normal, reasonably educated, and generally sensible. Some of these angry people are ignorant, racist, and/or just hateful. If it is going to become an effective movement, it is going to need to purge the ignorant/racist/hateful types and develop a set of policy proposals.
I get annoyed when I see people focus on the bad actors at tea party events; not everyone participating is in league with the hateful/stupid ones. It is a logical fallacy to disregard the entire movement just because some of its members are rude fools. It makes about as much sense as disregarding the entire liberal/progressive movement because some members think 911 was an inside job.
It is probably too much to hope for, but I would love to see a third party develop that would focus less on getting new government programs/spending and more on asking these questions:
-is this existing program working?
-is this proposed new program going to work?Posted 2 years ago # -
the problem with the tea party movement is it has moved from a legitimate political movement to a marketing tool for idiots.

The problem with the Democrat party is that it has become a marketing tool for lobbyists and rent seekers.

Which could also explain why some people are angry at government... it's perceived as not working in their interests.
