@agtw31, PLEASE don't call the deputy chief who's pretty much singlehandedly taking all the public heat for this group decision a "lady cop". Really, really offensive.

Interesting show. I am betting the Crimestoppers folks would disagree with moving Precinct 1's liaison officer to Polaris. At the University Area Commission meeting, a Precinct 4 administrator said that they would invite Officer Smith to take the open liaison position in Precinct 4 (which is shifting/expanding south to 3rd Avenue, as you know...)

Am I wrong in thinking that the police don't have a problem with this other than how it is being implemented effects shifts/benefits of officers? From what I have read/heard/been told, the officers of Precinct 1 are concerned with the lack of input from anyone, about the problems that could arise when the veteran officers are no longer on the beat, and they are concerned with the rational behind the proposed plan. Also, they are dedicated to their jobs - see Dan Adair's letter: http://www.shortnorth.com/letters.html. I don't speak for them. This is what I have learned.
I wasn't able to connect to Mr. Adair's letter. Is he an officer?
None of that is mentioned in the complaint(s) filed by the FOP...it sounds more like the method rather than the outcome.Posted 2 years ago # -
@labi - good news about Officer Smith. Thank you.
@berdawn - go to http://www.shortnorth.com/ and scroll down to his letter. Yes, Officer Dan Adair.Posted 2 years ago # -
Columbus Police Can Proceed With Redistricting
Thursday, June 10, 2010The Columbus Division of Police can proceed with redistricting, an arbitrator announced on Thursday.
After the union representing officers filed a lawsuit seeking to stop division plans to redistrict city patrol precincts, the two sides were ordered into arbitration, 10TV's Tanisha Mallett reported.
The proposed redistricting plan would redraw the city's precinct boundaries and change patrol districts for many officers. Changes to precincts will begin July 11, Mallett reported.

Residents view new police zones with skepticism
Wednesday, December 1, 2010
BY JIM WOODS
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCHResidents of the Near East and South sides seem willing to give the Columbus police redistricting plan time, but they question whether it's making a difference.
Deputy Chief Kim Jacobs, architect of the plan, stayed 30 minutes longer than planned last night to field questions from about 30 residents who came to East High School. It is the first of five meetings to gauge residents' reaction to the five new patrol zones that were put into place in July.

I didn't want to start a new thread about this, but our Short North store was robbed for the second time in three weeks last night. This is part of a rash of crime going on, and the buzz among business owners is growing louder. We weren't open when the redistricting plan went through, but I think its safe to report now after talking to our neighbors that there is a direct correlation with a pretty sizable increase in bricks through windows in the middle of the night.

As someone who has lived near and frequented the SN for years I am very sorry to hear that you have been robbed twice in that short of a period, or at all for that matter.
The window breaking phenomena seems to have a long history in the area and well precedes the precinct change. I wonder though if an increase in vandalism (not necessarily theft) might also correlate to the apparent increase in very drunk people roaming the SN at night. Their numbers have been increasing and they also seem to multiply as the weather gets warmer.
I have seen an increasing number of the whole gamut of vomiting, near pass out drunk and/or rowdy shitfaced groups wandering around at the wee hours. I really think some bars need to start cutting people off when patrons are noticeably tipsy. This is also from people coming from the AD. I really do not want the Short North Arts District to turn into a version of campus. when the moon comes out.

I'm not exactly a fan of big brother, but I have little issue with cameras on public streets. I think High Street in the SN warrants consideration for cameras.

I have also seen more and more drunk behavior and malicious mischief. I think that would help keep people in line and also maybe make some of the bars a little more responsible.
Despite the precinct changes, police response time still seems pretty good. I believe that they caught the guy who held up the Candle Lab in February within 30 minutes.

Well, they caught a guy within 20 minutes. We didn't find out until the next day that it was the wrong guy.
I think of these things as two separate issues, but they could be related. On one hand, there are drink people doing dumb things late at night. But the guy who robbed us this week threw a brick through our window at 2am and tried to steal money from the register. I don't know that many people that go drinking, and then decide to rob a store. I don't have any good answers, but there seems to be consensus that the number of robberies has gone up significantly as of late.
