I don't think they are fucking a neighborhood on purpose. We're just having yet another moment where the incompetence of city officials is shining through.
The message from city officials when trying to pass the city-wide tax increase was ALL around public safety and fear. Pass this increase if you don't want to see an increase in crime and a delay in fire response times. There were a lot of people that bought into it and stumped on behalf of the city to push that message. Public safety was at stake if this is not passed. I feel conned by that message and the current approach to public safety in the Short North.
Well here we are. Crime is on the rise. Police response times in the Short North are absolutely pathetic at this point. In fact, you can't even get a human on the phone anymore when you call the Columbus Police non-emergency line. Have a car break-in? Just leave the details with an automated phone attendant. They don't even bother sending an officer to the scene anymore due to the volume of car break-ins.
Three weeks ago a friend that lives a block from High street in the Italian Village had his house burglarized. The burglar entered the downstairs of his home while he was sitting upstairs watching a movie with his 6 year old daughter and his wife. This burglary was the catalyst that prompted him to accept a job in Raleigh and move out of this city. There will be more people that leave when their feelings that this city doesn't have its shit together are validated. In fact, I know many people looking to get out.
I could drop more criminal anecdote after anecdotes like the one above. I know of dozens. It's crystal clear to me that crime is up here and it will get progressively worse the warmer it gets. Our current policing strategy is not working. Reducing the number of officers will not help matters.
And yes, I'm not naive enough to think that crime doesn't or should never happen. I know I'm "living in the city". I've lived in plenty of big cities 5 - 10x's the size of Columbus. I have a reasonable expectation of public safety. I know crime happens. I get it.
That said, again - policing efforts in the Short North are failing. I can't see how reducing the number of officers in the Short North will improve police response times in this "crown jewel of urbanism" that we're trying replicate all over the city.
Anyhow, where did I say anything about "suburban people feeling safe" in the Short North? Thanks for elaborating and enlightening me on a non-existent point I never made.
As far as complete gentrification goes. When we get rid of the blood bank, White Castle, Dollar Store, Mike's Bar, Bollinger Tower, the sex shop and the check cashing place we might get "completely gentrified".
Otherwise we have a ways to go.
