I just bought a PS3, and I've been pretty out of the loop as far as console gaming is concerned for a while. Does anyone have any recommendations for PS3 or recent PS2 titles to check out? I have "Resistance: Fall of Man" which looks amazing and is fun as hell, though I'm not typically into shooters (which should be a testament to its quality). I don't really get into sports games either, but I'm up for almost anything else.

Obviously you are out of the loop if you bought a PS3. There's hardly anything out for it yet except for...

Oh... well then... start hunting some PS2 games then because of the PS3 games currently available around half are either shooters or sports titles with another good chunk of them being racers, which is a drag if you're not into those either. The Xbox360 skews heavily towards those genres too, but it's been around long enough for a few diverse titles (Viva Pinata) and other quality titles to come out.
As far as PS1 & PS2 games go you should be able to find all sorts of classics for dirt cheap at your local EBGames/Gamestop used game bin, as well as on Amazon or any other used-game site.

My recommendations:
PS2:
Katamari Damacy, We Love Katamari (these two are must haves)
Resident Evil 4 (The gamecube version is prettier though)
Burnout 3
Silent Hill 2, 3 & 4
Guitar Hero I & II (Might have to check to see if the guitars are compatible with the PS3)
Viewtiful Joe
Psychonauts
Time Crisis 2 & 3 (Have to check to see if the guns work with PS3)
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
Okami
Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, & San Andreas
Metal Gear Solid 3
EyeToy: Play 1 & 2 & Kinetic (Have to check to see if camera works with PS3)
Tony Hawk 4 & Underground 1 & 2
Devil May Cry 1, 2, 3
Ico
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
Bully
Beyond Good & Evil
Frequency
Rez
Alien Hominid
Taiko Drum Master (Have to check to see if the drums work with PS3)
PS1:
PaRappa the Rapper
Dance Dance Revolution Konamix (Have to see if the mats work with PS3)
Resident Evil
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
Final Fantasy Tactics
Metal Gear Solid
Silent Hill
Driver
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Oh, and Walker covered most of my PS2 recommends already, but I'll add in:
God of War
Destroy All Humans
Warriors

God of War 2 out next month!

Pretty much what Walker said, except also:
PS2:
Amplitude
Shadow of the Colossus
Psychonauts again
Mercenaries
Whatever Midway collection has Smash TV on it
Um Jammer Lammy
Tony Hawk 3
Beyond Good and Evil again
Kingdom Hearts
Soul Caliber 1
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy if you don't mind repetition
PS1:
(good luck finding any of these for cheap)
Jumping Flash
Bushido Blade 2
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Mr. Driller
Avoid:
-Soul Caliber 2
-Taiko Drum Master unless you like breaking your wrists
-Alien Hominid unless you like throwing your controller through your screen
-Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas unless you like carefully making turns in oil tankers while people are shooting at you and trying to ram you and a woman is screaming about how stupid you are
-Frequency unless you got addicted to Amplitude and/or you really love Tempest
-Tempest X

I considered not putting it on the list since I've only played this one as a one-day rental while I spent a decent amount of time on GTAIII and VC. Honestly, GTAIII is good enough unless you're a hardcore fan. VC is more of the same style game play with the EXACT same graphics with the addition of motorcycles and 80s music, which doesn't enhance it that much, so really no need to play further if you only thought GTAIII was ok.
I read that you could get a haircut and get fat in San Andreas, but I didn't make it that far. Sounds like they've crossed over too much into the world of Sims, but I figure that aspect could be ignored as optional as you play for the standard gameplay.
So yeah, I'll take your word then and UNrecommend it.

Ha! What I meant was that I haven't been keeping on top of Sony's releases since I sold my PS2 two years ago. I bought the PS3 for some specific titles with which I am familiar and based on my own recent experiences with the three new consoles out.
Anyway, thanks for the comprehensive list of suggestions. By your list, Walker, it seems to me like you'd enjoy Gitaroo Man. Have you played it? I owned it for PS2 a long time ago and loved it.

Why?? This is one of the original PS titles I'm almost definitely going to try to find. By the time you get to level 97, its visuals are seizure-inducing... epileptastic!

+1 for Bully. I heard nothing but good things.
I also really got into Kingdom Hearts 2.

I don't mean to turn this into a GTA:SA thread, but I feel I should mention that 90% of people seem to really enjoy the game. It just always felt to me like the designers substituted "difficulty" with "gameplay problems." I didn't even make it to the "difficult" missions, and I've found myself giving up on the game two or three times.
The fatness/muscle thing is maybe the most worthless addition of all. You'll frequently be running down the street, your breath heavy on the bandanna that's covering your face, sweat dripping down your arms onto your AK-47 as you wonder where Los Aztecas are going to pop up next, and then all of a sudden the game will go "BURRP" and a status bar will pop up to show you that your muscle mass has gone down. It's not as stupid as your girlfriend calling you in Metal Gear Solid to discuss movies with you, but it's close. And no, you can't avoid it. Fat and muscle affect your fighting abilities, and if they get low enough your health begins to ebb away.
When I first rented the game, my roommate watched me raising virtual barbells for five minutes and then began to list the things I could be doing other than pressing buttons on a controller to fill a status bar to help some fictional guy I didn't really even like all that much. He was correct to do so.
All that being said, there are some pretty sublime moments in the game, so if you can get it for less than $20 I guess you might as well pick it up.

I also really got into Kingdom Hearts 2.
I was a bit disappointed in KH2. The graphics and production values were through the roof, but I thought the first one had a much deeper and better combat system.

That's what the cheat codes are for!

Handy site. Has all PS3 games divided into categories, has reviews, has videos and screenshots, all of that stuff. A lot of the really impressive stuff seems to be coming later this year though.

I never played it, but I was going to recommened it based on the fact that I've heard nothing but good reviews. The only bad thing I've heard about it is that it's far too easy.
So yeah, maybe pick up Kingdom Hearts 1 instead?

heh I never played Kingdom hearts 1 so I wouldn't know. What I liked about 2 was it is a really really long game if you go for the "I have to beat everything" style of play. I agree most of it is pretty easy but there are a few parts that will drive you up the wall to complete. (the fighting is easy, the timed mini games can be tuff) But with the game being so long that fact that it's easy is not all a bad thing. Plus it is beautiful to look at like most Squaresoft games.
My one note on GTA. Does anyone remember the game DRIVER? GTA stole everything from that game. before that game GTA was a above the car view. Suddenly Driver comes out, and GTA changes all of their looks. Just sorta interesting.

I don't know that? Is that an even older game that had the same concept and from the perspective of behind the car? or is this some joke I am not understanding

I recommened the original PS1 game for Twist to pick up. I enjoyed that game. I never played Driver 2 though, and I heard Driv3r was pretty god awful.

I only ever played Driver 1. it was a really fun game at it's time.
