Anyone a member at Planet Fitness on Indianola in Clintonville? Anyone have any feedback? Good stories, bad stories?
(I'm asking this question for a friend that lives in Clintonville, and is considering joining this fitness club.)

I have three friends that are members there. They all seem to like it. I hear it is small but has all the basics you need, and of course it is dirt cheap which is a bonus.
I'm not a member, but a TON of my friends are, and they have had nothing but positive feedback.
my friends and i used to lift there when it was worlds gym... then planet fitness moved in and took out a ton of the weights for a smoothie bar... and got rid of the scale to create a "judgement free" place... so we have relocated since. but it is dirt cheap... i think its only like 10 dollars a month or something.
i used to be a member. the only thing that got old quick was that the crowds seemed to come in waves... not necessarily by the hour but by the week...
I wondered if it had to do with them sending out a crapload of advertisements to get people in the door, which is fine... i mean, businesses need to advertise & make money, etc. but, when you bulk mail everybody giving away a free month & then $10/month after that, it would just get insane in there. it felt like i would have to wait for days to get a treadmill and it would just be SUPER packed.
After awhile though the crowds would taper off (probably after people weren't so gung ho going to the gym anymore) until the next mass mailing, when it would be packed again.
but, on the flip side, everybody was always nice. when we signed up and even when we cancelled our membership they didn't hassle us, which was awesome. no mind control tactics like bally's. :)
oh, and they have tootsie rolls... large bowls of tootsie rolls. lol.

I would think that kinda defeats the purpose of being there...that sucks about it being busy like that, though. Makes it hard for someone to just do their normal routine.
I just wanted to say thanks for all the feedback. She's leaning on the side of joining now.
I say... No scales and a smoothie bar? I would be so in if it were closer to my house.
yeah, it was a pain when it was busy... but thankfully nobody was ever a dick. like, i never had a bad experience there. sometimes when places are a madhouse you get people trying to cut in front of you and just being rude... but i never had a problem there!
Those of you who said that the place was a madhouse -- what time of day?
I'm a member at this gym...To put my two cents in. It gets crowded to the point that it is not worth going. It's impossible to do circuits b/c there isn't enough equipment. And it should be noted the cost isn't actually $10 a month, but a little higher. The gym charges a $50 fee once a year. If you aren't a heavy lifter, then it's a pretty good place...just was too crowded during the 5 p.m. rush - as in not-worth-your-time-to-go crowded.

I see what you're trying to do with the bad review, there.
And I like it.
And I must add: Planet Fitness tootsie rolls are poisonous. DO NOT JOIN.
...and if you DO join, STAY OFF THE TREADMILLS. SERIOUSLY. THEY WILL KILL YOU.

I'm onto you. Both.
So, in the mornings or before 5:00 is reasonable?
Try and get there before 4 p.m. And remember this too isn't guaranteed but it is more tolerable. I have also noticed from my time there that on certain days you do not want to do specific exercises. If you're weightlifting avoid doing chest work on a Monday...everyone and their mother will be doing it. Also, if you run out of space in the main room, the "cool" (as in cold) is usually pretty empty. Just bring a sweater if you don't plan on hitting it hard.
Yesterday evening, around 6pm wasn't very crowded, especially for a Monday. Summertime.
I'm the dude in the Hot Pink jogging suit with matching headband, come up and say Hi.

My old gym had an old guy who always smelled like week old tuna.
Anyhow, I'm headed there now.
I can't believe no one has mentioned the monthly pizza night and bagel morning events. Seriously.
Anyway, I'm a Planet Fitness member, but the crowding issue, especially in the winter, has me thinking of straying. I'm also sort of aggravated that the gym continues to run promotions that, judging by the number of people I see, are quite successful, yet the owner has yet to follow through on his plans (reported in This Week shortly before PF opened) that he'd make the place a 24-hour gym once the demand was there.
But yeah, it's cheap, and it's the closest place to both my home and work, so it's hard to get the momentum to try anywhere else.
If I can get there before 4:00, it's usually not a problem. It fills quickly after, though. I am not a morning-workout person, nor do I know how anyone can be.
Those calories you just burned can be recaptured on the spot with free pizza. Tonight! Get in mah belly. NOM NOM NOM NOM.
A friend told me they are 24 hours now Monday to Friday. I would join them, but too far to allow myself to make excuses not to go. I am looking at Urban Active Grandview and Short North Fitness - not 24 hrs and no free pizza though :(
