In light of recent threads, I've been thinking a lot about human self-sustainment - how crazy it is that I rely 100% on industrialization. Without Giant Eagle, I'd starve. Without my heater, I'd freeze. I can't plant, hunt, sew, carve, build or even run a mile without collapsing. In short, I lack the necessary skills for human survival outside of the technosphere.
So I got to thinking. Wouldn't it be fun and useful to have a resource where people could learn and teach these lost arts? [Disclaimer: I realize this is a totally "Stuff White People Like" thing to want, but I'm pretty much the archetypal educated progressive urban tree hugging bleeding heart and might as well embrace it.]
Wouldn't it be neat for my family to spend a vacation educating ourselves about sustainability in this manner? Attend a pioneer boot camp? Planting, gardening, etc. would be useful for anyone, of any background and any socioeconomic status, to learn how to do.
If anyone has suggestions or thoughts on the topic, I would love to hear them. I know that all of you are very well educated about such issues, and have great ideas to share :)
