Hubert’s Pierogi ($1.50 each) are wonderfully stuffed with potato, cream cheese and onions, and are drenched in a butter sauce. It seems like little effort went into the presentation of these treats, but that was more than made up for by the rich flavors and savory ingredients used. I found the dough to be slightly on the thick side, which made the exterior a bit chewy, but that’s really a fairly minor complaint. These pierogi were definitely the stand-out item of the meal and almost dangerously addictive (I’m craving more of them as I type this).

Barley's does 1/2 Priced Pierogi Platters all day on Sunday. Throw in a $3 Scottish and you are in a happy place.

Now if we just starting serving Slivovitz!

Or malinówka, wiśniówka, miodówka, śliwówka, pieprzówka, and dereniówka if you are talking strictly Polish piergies!

I always select pierogies as my side dish with the Barley's burgers. Tasty!

Chiming in from the north, the Lithuanians make a syrup from mountain ash berries, for flavoring vodka. My grandfather used to make this. Here's a charming auto-translation:

The recipe and way of preparation "Tincture from a mountain ash"

Take berries of the mountain ash, collected in the autumn after the first frosts. Pour them in the big large bottle so that to fill it on 2/3 volumes, fill in 40-45-процентной with vodka. Then put in a dark warm place for 3 weeks then vodka will get dark brown colour and a smell of a wood mountain ash. After that tincture filter and spill in bottles. On the berries which have remained in a large bottle it is possible to pour still the same quantity of vodka, to insist 3 weeks, and then to filter and pour on bottles. Experts assert, that this tincture has even more expressed bouquet of a mountain ash.

ETA the word in Russian is percent so that's a reference to 80 - 90 proof, and my grandfather packed the berries with sugar, and let them shed their moisture into it, to make a syrup.

Yogi Perogi is an odd place. When they say 'Yogi', I'm fairly certain they mean this:

And there's nothing inherently wrong with that, I suppose, but in practice... well... odd is the word I keep coming back to.

The perogies are made with unbleached wheat, and the outsides are unusually dark, thick & doughy. We tried the 'traditional' style, which were filled with sauerkraut, mushroom & Swiss. Fillings were fine, but the dough was a deal breaker.

We ordered the potato & cheese filled, too, but they screwed up the order and gave us two of the traditional.

Counter service was almost comically disengaged, which was amazing considering that it was run by the owner. He'd take an order, walk away, and then - eventually - return and ask if we had paid. I'm fairly certain he felt 'centered', but he betrayed no real enthusiasm for his business.

As of now, I share that sentiment. Hope they can pull things together.

@Drew -Sorry to hear that Yogi's Perogies' service was so bad - we were looking forward to it! Is it just me or have restaurant service level in-general declined over the last few years? We eat out a lot - focusing on locally owned/avoiding chains and tipping well - and it doesn't seem to matter that we tip well... and are friendly & nice. Service seems to be something that is left to the mood of the server that day. Sometimes good/sometimes not so good, depending on the day. Whether the owner is running the place... whether the servers have been there a long time... regardless of the age of the server... I'm not sure how to fix it, but I want to gripe about it because I feel like it is getting worse/not better.

This new dumpling slinger opened in April of 2012 on Grandview Avenue, and stands out as a bit unique as pierogies are almost all they offer. The tiny shop is technically more of a retail store than a restaurant, serving pierogies either hot to order, or frozen in packs to eat at a later date. The small shop boasts a very small seating area and a patio table for two out front if you are in the mood to dine in.
