I've not seen anyone post this here, but this 70 minute (!) review of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace pretty well covers why I hated this movie, and moreover why most movies make me hate everyone and want them all to die.

And for the most part I have. Especially the big studio releases. When I *do* see the blockbusters I have pretty low expectations, and am generally happy if I can be entertained. I'm OK if they have at least basic internal consistency/logic and involve me enough to be entertaining.

See, and that's the flipside here. I'll read reviews in the New Yorker, NYT, RottenTomatoes, IMDB, CU, etc. and try to get an idea if I'm up for seeing it.
There are some truly great movies being made even by large studios.
For example, a big surprise to me this year was Kathyrn Bigelow's movie "Hurt Locker" about an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team in Iraq. I had heard a few rumbles about how good it was here on CU, and had seen good reviews from somewhere else. I figured it would be at least entertaining, but I was floored at how well the whole film worked together. the cinematography, acting and direction was fantastic, and the casting of even minor and secondary characters was perfect. In the end, the whole film was pitch-perfect. Enough action to entertain, move the plot and create suspense and enough message to leave you thinking about the film days and weeks later.
Mostly though I just watch Ozu films while polishing my monocle. :-D
