Move Forward With Rail Service For Ohio

Rather than a pointless online petition -- if they went and actually got 1000 signatures, they could start collecting signatures to initiate state statute via ballot approval. To put something on the ballot you need 6% of the last gubernatorial election - which is 216,158 registered voters signatures.

Not sure what would happen to the federal $400 million if this was approved via a ballot measure? Anything short of that is wasting time as I don't think Kasich is going to change his mind.

It looks like we won't be getting rail service for the next several (at least ten) years to come.

Perhaps if there was more of an actual push from the population then we would be getting rail service. Politicians listen when people talk, and venting on CU isn't enough.

If enough people push an idea it will become reality, but in Columbus everyone seems to have resigned to bitching on ColumbusUnderground while we let COTA or the mayor make the decisions for us. Just look at what is going on right now in the Arab world. Perhaps its time for the people to take action?

Ohioans did not want the 3C, the most recent polling shows that.

Kasich ran with a promise to kill it, the voters knew this.

It's democracy, he won, it's his agenda.

That would be awesome. But perhaps at least some popular activism on the subject? Laypeople (ie: voters) don't seem to like it very much when it looks as if politicians are "telling them what to do" or "whats best for them."

I don't think many would disagree when looking at the facts that transit is safer, and healthier for people. But IMO, the push for transit/rail needs to come from people in this city. If the push for a streetcar/light rail came from a citizen group, it could go from being seen as something people dismiss as the "the mayors trolly boondoggle" to something that people would be willing to support because the idea is coming from people that will use it. Transit goes from something being imposed by our leaders, to something being demanded by our citizens.

I'm curious what kind of "high speed" they are talking about. It'd be great if they were talking 110+ mph, but realistically it'd still probably be up to 79mph or 90mph depending on who owns the the rail lines (and hopefully with an average is 50+ range). Even just having trains going through Cleveland at reasonable hours would be huge improvement. The last time I checked it seems like most arrive and depart in the early to mid morning (1am - 5am).

With the the Ohio Turnpike being possibly privatized, and more than likely larger tolls, this Lake Erie high speed passenger plan could have some great ridership numbers. Who knows, it might not even need a per year subsidy.

FYI - the average speed of the Lakeshore Limited is 40mph. I can't find anything on the Capital Limited.
