So I'm just starting a thread about permaculture, in hopes of curtailing my derailment of other threads in order to discuss it. :)

The thing about permaculture is that it solves so many problems at once that it's a bit hard to disentangle it from other topics.

But I'll try! I'm also excited to talk about this with other people who are experimenting with it.

And this will also be a nice place to discuss things about permaculture that end up on the front page of the site, but disappear after a few days ;)

3 of the 4-H values come to mind : head, heart, and hands.

Head: reading and writing about the various principles and details of permaculture;

Heart: forming social networks based on or including this pursuit;

Hands: applying and testing these principles by growing food, fiber, medicine, and other materials.

This is not all-or-nothing. The degree to which permaculture becomes a part of our growing methods likely will vary from one person and situation to another.

No models are true in terms of being a completely accurate depiction of reality. But some of them are more useful than others.

I've been toying with turning part of the front yard into a pumpking patch. I don't get enough sun in the back for them to get as big as I'd like. And that part of the front lawn has not been reseeded yet so it kinda sticks out.
Couple issues with having them out front.
They'd have to be fenced, I'm afriad that either the critters, furry and the 2-legged teen aged kind, would mess with them.
The other is issue is that I'd be giving up about 1/5 of the front yard and I'm not really sure how the neighbors would feel about a pumpkin patch out front.
So that's kinda on my wish list for 2012.

Perhaps you could talk with you neighbors about it. Also, it might go over well with them if its design is aesthetically appealing. Let us know how this goes.
