I don't know what that is, but that is the first time I have heard the slang "whole paycheck" and you got me cracking up.

Oh, it is used in just about all Asian food. I am making some veggie sushi rolls and wanted some? I've been up to the market by Aki Hanna and they didn't have it :(

Thanks, I'll give it a try. It is bad when Google map can't find something, but I found it!

We checked out the Asian supermarket on 161 last weekend (across from Whole Foods) but didn't have much fresh food.

It grows like a weed, so put it in your garden this spring. Look for it at Oakland Nursery as seeds for Shiso. Huge plant and you won't keep up with use. It re-seeded itself too, I think.
It is a strong allergen/toxic to some people. Steingarten wrote about it, but I don't have an immediate reference.
My favorite use of it is to wrap fish hunks in it before a tempura treatment. Stole this from Kikyo.
Try the store located near what used to be Restaurant Japan (on Henderson) - Akihana, maybe? The store used to be called 'Seafood Japan' and was the best pure Japanese store as opposed to generically Asian.

Shiso can be hit or miss fresh; however, I was just at Koyama Shoten, a Japanese grocery store on Sawmill Road, about halfway between Bethel and 161, on the West side of sawmill; it is in a strip mall with Moretti's and an Army recruitment place. They had it.
The only thing I would caution about growing it is that it only grows really well the 2nd year; the first it barely comes up, and after the 2nd year, the leaves get leathery. A few farmer have grown it for farm markets, but I've never found the tender leaves at the market that I've found when dining at Kihachi, or that I've purchased at Tensuke (don't have it right now) or Koyama.
Also, I don't know if you've made the rolls before or not, but I'm quite fond of buying umeboshi and then using the shiso which is included. This is frequently what you get when you order an umeboshi roll at Akai Hana.

I can't believe they didn't have it at the Akai Hana grocery. It is always there! They usually have it at Crestview Market on Crestview and High.
Watch out if you grow the stuff. It's very happy here and like other members of the mint family, will soon spill out all over the place. Cracks in sidewalks, walls, all through your nice flowerbed, etc. etc. It is an annual though, so I'm curious about Lisa's comment. It is supposed to reseed itself, so maybe the trick would be to get the leaves when they're tender in early spring, or just sow it continuously all summer long like other greens? It is nice as a chiffonade in an Asian-inspired salad, too.
But oooh, umeboshi.... Umeboshi=Heaven on earth.

That has not been my experience. It was huge the first year and I didn't replant it because ... I forgot. The second and third year were about the same and it didn't get leathery. I agressively trimmed it down and only used a tight selection of young leaves.

There is a largish asian market on the northside at Cleveland and Innis (amos center).
