How often these days do you read about a city that is successful in luring jobs into Downtown from one of its suburbs? For many cities these days, this scenario all too often plays out in reverse.
What is healthy for Columbus is ultimately healthy for the metro. The same can't necessarily be said, however, if Dublin or another suburb manages to lure jobs and businesses away from Columbus.

I don't believe any tax breaks or direct tax incentives are being offered in this deal with Nationwide.
The City of Columbus is creating a TIF for the area around Grandview Yard that will fund public infrastructure improvements around NRI's Grandview Yard project.
So essentially, tax money is being devoted to improving public roads and sidewalks and whatnot, which is what NRI wants, but also stands to benefits the general public moreso than just flat out tax breaks for Nationwide.

That is really a shameless double standard.
For the metro, it's a push either way. The cities are not the be-all and end-all and the suburbs are not limbos where jobs somehow don't count. The metro wouldn't necessarily be healthier if Cardinal Health and the Limited moved everything they had downtown. For Columbus it's a win, and for Dublin it's a loss. For Hilliard, Gahanna, Pickerington, and basically everywhere else in the metro, it's occasion for little more than a shrug, save for some employees who may have shorter/longer or more/less convenient commutes.

Let's build more housing and give these new workers a place to live. An even better anouncement would have been a new mixed used tower (office, residential, retail) right across from the arena to accomodate the influx of new employees. Oh well, good news either way.
Also, I don't understand the argument by some about how downtown is taking jobs away from the suburbs. The suburbs do the same thing to downtown. Logistally and economically, it makes more sense to have your employees together in as few facilities as possible.

Dublin taking small hit on shifting Nationwide jobs

Dublin City Manager Terry Foegler wasn’t among those surprised when Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. on Wednesday disclosed plans to move 1,400 of 5,000 company jobs from the suburban city to Columbus, most of those coming from office parks.
Dublin estimates the lost jobs could cost the city $900,000 a year, or 1.3 percent of the $65.9 million in income tax revenue it receives yearly.
“There was no playing off one community against another for the jobs,†Foegler said. “That speaks well of Nationwide.â€Â

The city of Columbus eventually might apply money from the Grandview Yard tax increment financing district to its own nearby capital projects.
But for now, those funds will improve public infrastructure around Nationwide's redevelopment project.
Columbus officials in July announced their intention to establish a TIF district around the section of Grandview Yard within city limits. The TIF was approved by Columbus City Council on Oct. 4.
