lifeontwowheels wrote You know I nearly sliced my thumb off at Boy Scout camp. Went to the ER the next day when my mom picked me up. We never sued. It was a freak thing.A comment on the younger generation in general. Yeah, I know I probably have not reached the age yet where I can start b***ing about the kids. I work with young kids on a near daily basis between both jobs, and the general thought is how much we are screwed in the coming years with them as our next leaders. There is very little respect for elders, very few public manners, attitudes by the bushel. A lot comes done to parenting and the example it sets. These parents could probably do a lot, positively, to enhance little league and make it safer, if that was there concern.
It was a long while ago, but another little league incident involving the heart showed a chest plate/protector of sorts to protect the heart. Why not spend the time and energy towards something like that? Instead, Little League may be so tied up in law suits that it suffers for it and is unable to provide a structured league for the kids.
Whatever happened to the day when kids were told to go play and came back dirty, smelly and scratched up 8 hours later? I miss being a kid.
I was just thinking about this the other day. When I was a kid (I can tell I am getting old now, even using that phrase), things really were different. We spent every day outside unless it was snowing, hailing, or there was lightning. We spent all day playing wiffleball, football, smear the queer (sorry did not name it), and then when it got dark it was time for flashlight tag. We were dirty, tired and covered in bruises and only came in long enough to scarf down dinner and get back outside. My brother and I spent lots of time in the doctor's office due to various significant cuts, broken bones, and the time I accidently ripped his ear off (Long story).
Any kid wearing a helmet to ride a bike would have been labeled and ostracized.
I am derailing here, but I wanted to comment because every time I see a kid on a bike with a helmet I think about the time we made our own "ramp" and tried to jump it with our non-BMX bikes and the carnage that ensued. No helmets were involved. We also used to ride down the stairs in laundry baskets, resulting in terrible rug burns when they inevitably flipped over. I owe my mom.
And I miss being a kid too...
