Hi, I have recently been offered a job in Columbus and I am looking for a nice apartment. I would like one bedroom or studio in a nice atmosphere with lots of cultural offerings, somewhere semi-convenient to ohio state medical center. Anyone have any suggestions? I really do appreciate it.

I'd suggest looking in Victorian Village/Short North and Grandview. Both are very close to the medical center and offer wide variety of one bedroom/studios apartments. Do you have a specific price range you are looking at?

Probably a good place to start:

Victorian Village is walking (or busing or biking) distance from the OSU Med Center.
If you're just looking for a short drive or slightly longer bus or bike ride, then most all of the neighborhoods listed here will work. Just depends on your price range and what specific types of amenities you want out of your neighborhood:
You can find out more about each neighborhood here:
- Arena District
- Bexley
- Brewery District
- Clintonville
- Discovery District
- Downtown
- Dublin
- Easton
- 5XNW
- Franklinton
- Gahanna
- German Village
- Grandview
- Grove City
- Harrison West
- Hilliard
- Hilltop
- Italian Village
- King-Lincoln District
- Market Exchange
- Merion Village
- Olde Towne East
- Red Brick District
- RiverSouth
- Schumacher Place
- Short North
- Upper Arlington
- University District
- Victorian Village
- Weinland Park
- Westgate
- Woodland Park

for OSU med, lots of residents and such live just south of OSU around King Ave. the Area of town is called Harrison West I believe. you'll want to be looking primarily west of Neil ave, North of 3rd. the areas around 7th are really nice, i think that's what they call "the circles" or something.

if you want North of campus, check out West Tulane, it's a nice street close to campus.

nivanudn - it can be confusing, but the Short North, Vic Village, Italian Village, Dennison Place and Harrison West sometimes get jumbled together. they are all contiguous neighborhoods south of campus and north of downtown.
i know it's not always possible, but i always advise people looking in Short North, Vic Village, Italian Village and Harrison West to visit for a day or two and literally walk/bike/drive the streets with your cell phone. a number of landlords still just post signs in the yard/window. there is also a huge scale in the quality of the rental stock, and a personal view can be extremely helpful. the upside is that a number of landlords tend to be very accommodating here, and if you visit and find a place in advance of your move it is not unheard of for them to hold a property with a deposit if you intend to move in later or to prorate the rent if you're not arriving in town until a later date.

Thank you all so much for your advice, it helps me immeasurably. As for price I would like to spend in the ballpark of $800/mo and I do not need a lot of space. I plan to visit next month so I will certainly go to all of the neighborhoods you have listed for me. Thanks again!

I think you want Harrison West for sure. It sort of depends on where you are moving from. If you're moving from a walking city then I don't think you're going to feel much of a difference in any of the neighborhoods mentioned. You'll definitely get closer to your 800 dollar price the further north you go.

We've found some cool apartments in this past this way.

I really do appreciate it.When are you moving to Columbus? If it's around September then I may be able to offer you a very cool apartment: loft style, hardwood floors, cathedral ceilings, etc. in an artsy yet professional building on King Ave, just a few blocks away from OSU med.
PM me if you want more info. It's in or below you price range too. Good luck.

I have a friend who frequently has apartments in Victorian Village for rent. Send me a PM and I'll put you in touch with him.
Best of luck on the move.

hm, this is also good advice for me too, as I am looking for a place to move into in the fall in this same area!

If you are looking for something immediate, (perhaps to hold you over til you find what you are looking for), I have a one bedroom appartment in the South Campus area (close to High), in a building on McMillen Ave for under 485$/month from April/May-August. Our lease is up at that point, we just bought in the area (near 5th & Summit), so it's not that we left because we think its a bad neighborhood.
