Have you ever wondered
What happened to the men.
Who signed the Declaration
That made this a free land.

Five were captured by the British.
Branded traitors, tortured, died.
Twelve men lost their homes and land.
Ransacked, burned what was their pride.

Two their sons were captured.
Two sons fought and died.
Nine killed in the Revolutionary.
Pledged their fortunes and their lives.

Twenty-four were Jurists and
Lawyers brave and true.
Eleven of them merchants.
Nine farmers all who knew.
~*~
If captured death was eminent.
To sign with quill and pen.
Have you ever wondered
What happened to these men?

Their livelihoods were ruined.
And their ships swept from the sea.
Stood against the British Navy.
Our freedom wasn't free!

Have you ever wondered
What happened to the men.
Those Patriots of long ago.
Could you be as brave as them...?

Longfellow overlooks that;
Several of the signers of the declaration were slave owners
Several of the signers were Indian killers
Several of the signers later drafted a constitution which denied voting rights to people whose assets (land)was below a certain threshold
Several of the signers were wife-beaters and/or adulterers
Several of the signers advocated religious persecution

What the Declaration was, in actual fact, was an expression of rebellion by wealthy ARISTOCRATS against a MONARCHY. "Freedom", as we presently define it would not come until the passage of the Voting Rights Act nearly 200 years later - and we STILL haven't passed the ERA!!!

Why we don't just pay civil servants full-time to honor our war dead/founding fathers/et cetera? That seems like it would both goad people into paying their taxes, and allow us to quantify exactly how much freedom costs (for economic impact analysis purposes).

I propose the milliwyatt be used as the standard unit for freedom per dollars.

Well, we already missed ComfestÃ¢â‚¬Â¦so i'm gonna say the Goodale Park gazebo, Sunday, July 12th at noon. I know it's a bit early, so you'll have to start drinking at sunrise to get the full effect.
