OSU slipped slightly in US News annual rankings of private and public universities from 53 in 2009 to 56 in 2010. Case Western Reserve was the highest ranking university in Ohio, coming in at 41. Among colleges, Oberlin was the highest ranking college in Ohio, making the top 25 list.

As a person who used to fill out these forms for another university, I wouldn't put any stock into the reliability of the ranking. This is one step above Forbes' famous Top 10 Lists. Any real ranking would take many months of comparative analysis, as great and bad things about entities as large and diverse as universities can't always be entered into a spreadsheet.

Absolutely true. Which makes it a little discouraging when you know your institution is not above "playing the game", jockying for a couple spots from year to year. When it is as simple as a spreadsheet, the game is easy to play.

While the study may be less than perfect, the fact of the matter is that parents, prospective students and school administrators do pay attention to these particular rankings and often cite them and use them for setting goals.
Here is a quote from President Gee upon his return to Ohio State. "As just one example, let me cite the work of our colleagues in the Medical Center. This year, for the 15th consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report recognized Ohio State's Medical Center hospitals among our nation's very best. The magazine cited seven of our medical specialties, including a top-15 ranking for our cancer care and a top-10 ranking for the rehabilitation program. Clearly, Ohio State is poised to be a global leader in the health sciences."

Not really. There are good explanations for the national ranking drop and the public university ranking (18) stayed the same as last year. There were several OSU initiatives implemented last year (which were very successful) that actually had a negative impact on the rankings due to the very specific metrics and weighting schemes that are used by US News to 'measure' the schools. While I wouldn't say that the US News rankings are completely meaningless...I would say that movement up or down a couple spots doesn't really mean much of anything and most administrators realize this. On a bright note, OSU did better this year on freshmen retention, graduation rates, and full-time faculty metrics compared to last year and I think that says something very positive about the direction of the University.

more and more campuses are switching to the "university" label. just adding maybe 1 or 2 graduate programs. "they" say it attracts a larger demographic of student and "sounds better."

Part of it, but not always the case - locally Denison is a University sans a single graduate program.
In some states, i.e. PA it is a regulated definition and institutions have to meet certain criteria to be considered a University. In others you can use either/or and for some it is simply historic (i.e. The College of William and Mary).

Ah, thanks for the clarification. When I was school shopping in high school that was the explanation they gave us. Guess it was a good general rule.
