Ohio State named Bike Friendly University

In the last three years, Ohio State has invested more than $2 million into efforts to promote and provide a bicycle-friendly environment for students and visitors, according to the League of American Bicyclists.

The LAB has honored OSU as a Bicycle Friendly University for transforming its campus into a friendly bicycling culture. OSU is the 26th university to be nationally recognized and is the first in Ohio.

The bad news: Racks like this still exist on campus. (This is the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, last Friday).
The good news: There is a plan to replace all the outdated racks soon.

It's too bad Ohio is generally unfriendly to bicycles....hopefully this will change things in the state. Fortunately or unfortunately, we're all going to be biking a lot more in the near future with the global economic collapse fast approaching.

Weather doesn't keep me from riding. While being interviewed for an article about beer & bicycles, I told the reporter that it gets tough below 0 degrees. He was in Anchorage. He said people there ride in 43 below, when the sun doesn't rise.
I got put in my place.

*G* I'd ride down to about 30F but below that the puddles froze over and the wind chill was too nasty on my face.

I had a commute of about 4 miles to campus from home (OSU golf course area).
Sometimes it was a coin toss, take the Pontiac or take the Schwinn? It was really handy to have the bike on campus ... zoom ... zoom ...

Minneapolis has more bike commuters in the winter than Columbus does in the summer. What does that say?

Was thinking more of ice/snow/slush on the road. Well, that and I see fewer cyclists in winter than in summer.

Yes people bike in winter, deep snow, etc. Freezing rain, maybe not so much.

I would ride to work by the stadium, and I was half-cold from the wind and half-hot from the exertion. When I arrived I just needed a few minutes to equalize temperature and let the fog clear off my glasses.

It is nice that the LAB has honored OSU with this award.

Maybe it is time for OSU to rethink it's stance on participating in the federal program that gives people who commute to work via bicycle $20 a month for reasonable expenses incurred for the purchase of a bicycle, bicycle improvements, repair and storage.

About 3 summers ago I approached OSU HR and T&P and nearly everyone treated me like I was a burden for even asking if they were planing on participating.

Larry Lewellen who was at the time the VP of HR for OSU said this :

My assumption is that there is a small percentage of folks who could safely bike to campus. We need to spend less and less resources on these small-impact but costly implementations

New Covered Bike Parking Debuts on High Street Near OSU

The first of ten covered bike shelters will be making its official debut tomorrow morning. Located at 1912 North High Street (between 16th and 17th Avenues), the new structure contains five U-shaped racks for locking up bikes within a very short walk of The Wexner Center, multiple restaurants, and several major bus lines.
