With Lucas out for the rest of the tourney with a torn achilles, the NIU game is going to be a rough one for Sparty to get through, and advancing past the winner of OSU/TN even harder. Still, if there'a a coach up for getting his team through that, it's Izzo.
Meanwhile, if the Buckeyes play a solid game against Tennessee, I do think they'll be able to win. Everything really seems to be hinging on Diebler making his shots - Turner will do his thing, and Buford will hopefully do his, but Diebler needs to make the shots when they get him open looks. If he does, I think they're in pretty good shape.
The start of that Ga Tech game was rough, but I really liked their game-plan against the bigs - just keep driving the lane and sending guys crashing into them, to keep them in foul trouble. I think Matta saw enough of that against Oden that he knew it can be effective... even with as many guys as Ga Tech had down low.
The Buckeyes gave up way too many easy baskets to Tennessee. Where was the defense? Where was the rebounding?
Evan Turner scored 31 points but also had 6 turnovers. I felt like he played too much out on the perimeter. In this game they needed more help from him inside.
And I hate to say this but I really think Turner didn't have enough faith in his teammates the last part of the season. Lighty, Buford and Deibler had been stepping up big going into the Tenn game. Turner tried to do too much on his own instead of allowing the offense to have patience until someone would get an open look at the basket. They might have needed Turner to force the action earlier in the season but not lately.
That's my take, guess it's time to let it go.
I expect the Buckeyes to be a number one seed next year in the Big Dance. The only question is who will handle the ball. Turner played out of position at point guard this year and someone else will probably have to again next year unless a freshman can step up. Jared Sullinger will add needed bulk down low in the blocks.
I felt like in the last 10 minutes the Bucks needed a timeout to regroup. Sloppy, hairtrigger shots, unenthusiastic defense and HEY MATTA, CALL A TIMEOUT WILL'YA!?. They should've won that game easily but were unfocused.
The Lady Bucks were simply out of control in the first half against MSS, they really needed a timeout to check their egos and play more controlled sets.
But very good years for both, no denying it.
