And it just kills me that it seems like there is almost zero buzz around town about it. At least from the (admittedly unscientific) impression I've gotten from customers, is there is a whole lot less excitement/awareness about this team than the Jimmy Jackson teams, or the Mike Redd/Scoonie Penn Final four team from the late 90's or the Oden/Conely run. That makes no sense at all to me. I'm hoping that will change as we close in on tournament time.
The best way to put it for me personally- "basketball killed basketball." When I was a kid it was the Williams and then Ayers eras of OSU basketball, I was crushed when Burson broke his neck and I was watching the game on live satellite feed when Dick Vitale got himself in quite a pickle over his Funderburke aside... I loved basketball as a team sport back then. But now all the rules and styles of play have turned basketball into a rough-and-tumble debacle of fast breaks, bumping underneath, and accepted traveling all to support ridiculous scores that are supposed to excite the fan base- but it pushed me away. I even held on to women's basketball for a while, I've probably seen four times as many OSU women's games live as I have men's games... but the women's game is pushing towards the men's game in style as well and I'm losing interest. The one-year teams are a killer as well, not getting to see a player develop just plain sucks... I mean it's nice to have a superstar even for a year to watch them dominate, but really- not as fun as watching a kid come up from gangly freshman to elite senior. And then there's no fun for me watching most players when they get to the NBA (Michael Redd excluded), mostly for the same reason I have issue with almost all professional sports - selfishness at some point supersedes the love of the sport and it becomes evident and poisons so many things around the players... and it makes me dislike the pro sports.
enough whining from me for the morning, I'm proud of the success of the Buckeyes- but I'm disappointed in the game of basketball. It was originally designed as a finesse and tactic sport which avoided the contact and injuries of rugby, and over time it's certainly moved away from that ideal.
