I for one am in total support of Polanski's arrest. I find people like Whoopi Goldberg who says that he didn't commit "rape rape" disgusting. Debra Messing saying that he shouldn't be arrested b/c it's a loss for the world of art makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit. Oliver Stone, Woody Allen (no surprise there), all of them....

Don't commit the crime if you...

I think if I were a celebrity, I would not make comment on the matter. He needs to be locked up. He admitted guilt then booked. Screw that guy.
I hate how everyone just conveniently forgets what he did. They say “But it's been so long". Well so what I bet they would be singing a different tune if it was there kid.Posted 3 years ago # -
The guy drugged a 13-year-old girl and then raped her. And then fled the country so he wouldn't have to go to prison. Lock him up.

Didn't the victim come out in support of him not serving any time? I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm just asking if the wishes of the victim matter.

But I don't think it matters what she thinks about his punishment. That's for the legal system to decide, not the victim.

Nuance? Oh no you didn't. Nancy Grace will destroy you.

Found this. Doesn't appear to be the case (damaging/embarassing part).
I know I have strange views about this stuff so I'm just gonna shove it :)

She was up set because she has put it behind her and does not want her past to keep being in the media. Especially the transcripts from the case.
I do not think they would retry him would they? He did pled already he just booked before he could be sentenced.Posted 3 years ago # -
Okay, what's up with the double posts? I post once. Comes up twice. arrrgghhh!

I think the victim would probably just like to be left alone. I am glad that everyone basically agrees. Celebs come out with these statements but never really have to defend themselves. They make their comments and then it's conveniently swept under the rug when the new LiLo drunk picture comes out. I'm with misskitty, if you don't care then just don't say anything. Don't SUPPORT him. It makes you look like an asshole. Can't you find something better to get behind and support other than a child raper?
I was sort of looking for a fight, haha! Not really.Posted 3 years ago # -

I agree with this guy:
The Hollywood folk defending Polanski are shockingly wrong on this one. Not only are they wrong, they're using their megaphone for evil. And that, ultimately is kinda disappointing. Someone on a blog somewhere (99? Createquity?) was talking about how rarely you see celebrity artists doing big pushes to support the arts and arts funding. There's some with musicians supporting music programs in schools but that's mostly it.
Well, we now know that what's really important and worth speaking out about to a lot of folks is trying to protect a man who orally, vaginally and anally raped a drugged thirteen year old while she begged him to stop, skipped bail and has been cruelly punished with multiple awards, two houses and a jet set European lifestyle. Well done there, what a noble stand to take, folks.
Look, I understand the tribal POV here, but still. Standing up for rapists? That's what you really wanna do?
And no, it doesn't matter that the judge in the case may have been a sleezebag. The drugging and rape are both stipulated facts, Polanski copped to them. And it doesn't matter that his wife was murdered or that his parents died in the Holocaust. That makes him a more sympathetic and complex person, I'm not saying he's an Evil Demon, simply that he's a rapist. And it also doesn't matter from a legal or ethical perspective that the now-woman whom he raped thinks he shouldn't go jail. It's kind of an interesting side note, but it ultimately doesn't matter any more than the face that "Roe" in "Roe v. Wade" is now anti-choice; no one with any sense would say "well, if Roe's against it, we gotta throw out Roe v. Wade now!". And ultimately it really really doesn't matter that Polanski is a great artist who had made some amazing movies. He raped someone. He should go to jail for it. I don't care how sorry he is, Whoopi, or how unlikely he is to do it again, that's not how the system works nor is it how we would want it to work in an ideal world.

Oh, and personally, I think he should rot. I also think knee jerk reactions do not a rational discussion make.

From what I've heard, it was her mother that took her over to Nicholson's house and she pretty much knew what was up. Not defending the rape, but just saying. I DO, however, think its hinkey that it took so long to pick him up. I mean he's got a house in wherever he was arrested. Did they just realize who he was?

When I think of a lynch mob going after someone I think of a group of people going after someone without a reason, i.e. for their opinion/color/ideal/religion. Not people going after a child rapist. Why don't these celebrities protest and sign petitions to let the creeps on "To Catch a Predator" go?

Even if she was totally down with the idea of her daughter being raped (which I don't think she was, though I don't think she was ever a contender for Parent of the Year), what Polanski did would still be rape.

Switzerland recently changed their extradition law, that's how Polanski got nabbed now, rather than sooner.

France has no extradition treaty with the U.S., and while he traveled throughout Europe, he avoided arrest in part because of lax policies on apprehending foreign fugitives. But in recent years, many countries have gradually tightened their efforts to find suspects abroad and extradite them.
It's also not clear how hard authorities was searching for him. The Swiss Justice Ministry said in a statement that U.S. authorities have sought Polanski's arrest around the world since 2005, although he has been a fugitive much longer.
"There was a valid arrest request and we knew when he was coming," Swiss Justice Ministry spokesman Guido Balmer told The Associated Press. He rejected the idea that politics may have played a part in the action.
Previous attempts to nab Polanski when he left France were thwarted because authorities didn't learn of his travel soon enough  or Polanski didn't make the trip, said William Sorukas, chief of the U.S. Marshals Service's domestic investigations branch.
"This is not the first time we have done this over the years," said Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office. She said warrants had been sent out whenever rumors circulated that he would be traveling to a country outside France.
