Unfortunately, animal rights is not on the minds of NFL owners, and probably not heavily on the minds of the opposing defense. That said, perhaps PETA should slip Ray Lewis/Bob Sanders/___ _____ some cash under the table for a late hit.
There is so much activity going on with pro athletes under the surface, that I think simply attacking Vick is misguided. When people make more money than they can possibly spend, their lives can get out of control pretty quickly. Not to say that all pro athletes live like idiots, they don't, but there are a lot of young men (primarily) who are groomed and coddled for a certain lifestyle that most of us have no category for. I am not excusing Vick by any means, but the league, and other leagues turn their heads as long as it means money is coming in. Unless the law gets involved, they have extremely low standards for their employees (the athletes).
You make a good point, and I think it shows a need for society to provide guidelines for acceptable behavior. In the case of professional sports, the players ultimately answer to the fans and sponsors, who indirectly pay their salaries. If things go bad enough for Vick, maybe the next kid thrown into the crazy situation of instant fortune and fame will stop short of doing something immoral because of Vick's example.
i.e. "No man, I don't want to be the next Michael Vick."
