All the coffee served at Travonna is fair-trade certified, if I'm not mistaken, and according to Devon who works there, the owners take 20 percent when someone buys work from local artists that's hanging on the walls. Many art galleries take a higher percentage.
I plan to talk to Travis, one of the owners, about selling food from some local folk. Del from the Wellness Forum makes some really tasty wraps, and perhaps Jenny of Patty Cake could also have some sort of business arrangement with Travonna.
In case anyone is wondering, I don't expect Travis and his business partner to serve only vegan food. But I would like to help the owners make the food there more interesting so as to, among other things, increase their profits.
Let's here it for local businesses such as Travonna that provide social venues that enrich our lives. I don't have a problem with someone making a profit. It's gargantuan corporations with excessive influence over our political process I have a problem with. How about you ?
The past couple of weeks, I've been opting for Travonna more and bars less, mainly because I've found I seem to get more work done as a reporter and activist when I can write for a couple of hours; talk with someone for a little while; and then get back to writing. At Travonna I can be social while getting work done. I can't quite do that at most bars.
Though sometimes it seems necessary, I generally dislike working in solitude. I don't like how prolonged periods of writing at home alone seem to affect my psyche. It's nice to have other human beings around, even if it involves only random and fleeting eye contact.
I suspect having a coffee shop open late or all nightâ€â€without the drunkenness of Buckeye Donuts --- adds to the vibrancy of our city. What do you think ?

The poetry open mic nite is Thursdays from 8-10 p. Organized by a professional writer, it seems to bring a racially and ethnically diverse crowd.
As for spoken---sometimes shouted--poetry and storytelling---if an age of energy constraints comes, it may bring with it a rebirth in these and other forms of home-grown entertainment.
Some of the poetry would be considered good in literary circles. But even that which wouldn’t is valuable as a way to bring people together.
Somewhere in some other venue maybe in some other city of the world, there is likely better poetry in strict literary terms. But in some ways that’s besides the point. This is where I am presently. A person pouring her or his thoughts and feelings out in front of strangers seems to fill the room with empathy.
Even a commie such as myself can appreciate how Travis, one of the owners here and a former airline pilot, has created a business that contributes to the vibrancy of our city. Small to medium sized businesses are not the ones hijacking our political system.
Conversations, and the relationships they facilitate, can be more intense and more detailed in a coffee shop than they can be at a noisy bar. Travonna is also not stuffy like some other coffee shops where people can seem so focused that the world outside of their computer screens barely exists.
Here, you can read or write for a couple of hours, talk with people for 15 or 20 minutes, and then get back to work. The conversations I’ve overheard here are almost as good as the ones I participate in.
