So there's construction fencing around the perimeter of the old shell station at 5th & High - anyone know what's going in?

Oooh, not that promising news, Joe Testa's site says the land is still controlled by the people who purchased it in the 1930s...

I'm just mildy curious why the whole thing was painted black...

There is actually a demolition permit that was issued on 9/27/07 for the Shell Station (1230 N. High) so it is the actual station. No other permits issued as of yet.
I've heard absolutely nothing about it...
Know anyone on the University Area Commission? By rights whatever the plan is should have gone by them at some point.

Actually...Shell Ohio is shown as the owner on demo permit. They do business as EQUILON ENTERPRISES LLC. I've always wondered why there wasn't an active gas station there. Maybe one's coming back? It would make sense for the area...

That gas station had one of the highest shoplifting and robbery rates in the city before it closed from what I had heard from a former employee there. It is a great location but it will have to have increased security if it plans to reopen after reconstruction.

Maybe they shouldn't sell 40's and deuces?

Be a shame if such a prime pedestrian location became a gas station. There are plenty of gas stations a few blocks east or west on 5th. No need to taint High with one.

I propose a bottomless abyss for the site. It would be kind of cool to have one in town, and it would be such an improvement over what was there.

Also, based on that drawing, it looks like the building is actually staying upright? The one to the north (the long, skinny one that fronts High). What is that? Is that coming down, too?

Best proposed use of space I've heard yet.
It's going to be hard to beat that in my mind.

really? I gotta say, for a website that seems to be all about recycling and health food and all that, I've never seen so much homeless guy hatred in my life. Granted, they're a pain in my ass too...but for fuck's sake. They're grown up adult people with such shitty lives they actually live in an underpass. Think about that...they LIVE in a fucking UNDERPASS. They eat food out of the trash, they drink what they can beg for, and the take a single smoke one of them gets and break it up into 10 to split with notebook paper. Some of these guys are just incredibly fucked up from the various wars we've made them go fight, some are mentally ill that we've kicked straight out onto the street because we don't want to pay for them anymore, but really??? We can't find 5 minutes of "I'm a good guy" in us to buy these fucking guys a pack o smokes, or a 6 pack, or a burrito from speedway???
Fucking talk to them, quit looking away, and find a little human in you.

Im not trashing every homeless person, just a select few. I work with the homeless on a daily basis, and while some truly want to make a better life for themselves, alot want nothing more than to remain vagrant, doing whatever they can to score a buck to have a 40 to sip on. While Im all for helping people that want to help THEMSELVES, the other group doesnt garner much sympathy
Just my 2 cents

it's buried in some older thread somewhere - there was a real estate posting for a 3 story mixed use office retail. nothing too exciting.

CVS? Or a nice athletic club?

My understanding is that the site is slated for a condo development. At the last SNBA meeting it was said to have sold recently for 2.1m.
