Never realized we had these...

Has anyone tried any Ohio-raised shrimp? Any good? Are there any local restaurants using Ohio-raised shrimp on their menus?

Those are three words I never expected to see in a headline together, in quite that order, ever.
Huh.
Well as it happens the shrimp festival is this weekend

Me either. ;) Anne was looking at an ad for an uber-local restaurant that uses tons of local ingredients, and the ad had a photo of a shrimp dish. We laughed a bit at first, but then thought... hrmm... wonder if there are freshwater shrimp farms in Ohio... and after some googling... it turns out that there are over 20 of them!
The shrimp festival is really a hoot. Not only can you eat Ohio shrimp (which is large and succulent) but you can pet a sturgeon. Who wouldn't want to do that?!
I had the pleasure of listening to a talk by Dr. Dave Smith at the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association conference last year. His motivation is fascinating - he wants to produce aquaculture protein in the most efficient way possible. He has done all sorts of experimental projects, of which shrimp is one, to grow fish in new ways, with new feeds, or in new places. Thus far, his most successful fish is trout.
We've been going to the fish & shrimp festival at Freshwater Farms for years. Good stuff! They only sell the shrimp once a year. (You can get their trout year round.) Barbara from the Tigers and Strawberries blog has mentioned occasionally finding shrimp at the Athens farmers market.
The shrimp are really good, rather succulent and sweet, and it's the one time of year I'm willing to tackle pounds and pounds of head-on shrimp. :-)
