OGP Walks into a Bar….
Stephen Woosley, co-founder of O.G. Productions, discusses the 1st Annual St. James Tavern Shorts Festival:
Why have a shorts festival at the St. James Tavern?
We have another production opening that week, Speed and Energy: An Evening in the Mind of Greg McGill. But, since we are performing it downtown at MadLab Theatre, it would be almost impossible to do a performance on July 1st there with all the Red, White and Boom festivities.
We tried to come up with a way to promote the Speed and Energy show, but also give people something different than they would get at the Speed and Energy show. We hit on the idea of doing some short pieces at places outside of the downtown area. I emailed Michelle Hill, owner of the James, and she was really enthusiastic about it. So, we decided to do the entire event there.
Who are the writers?
Amanda Bauer: She is a co-founder of OGP and has written 3 pieces that we have performed including our entry in Theatre24X7 at the Independent’s Day Festival last year. She has also written for several 24s, 48s, 12s etc. She writes and directs funny, tight pieces. So I knew this would be a piece of cake for her.
Chris Lane: Also a frequent contributor to OGP including putting together a piece for our last night of one acts. He was MadLab’s Artistic Director for a long time and is the godfather of improv in Columbus. And his Shenanigans theatre group was an inspiration for OGP.
Scott Tobin: One of the funniest, most prolific playwrights in Columbus. He has contributed short pieces to both nights of one acts OGP has put up including the hilarious Daddy Come Home.
Each piece has a character named Greg.
Just a coincidence.
Why The James?
Not only is it one of our favorite bars with some of our favorite bartenders, but also it’s one of the coolest places in Columbus to grab a drink. Awesome jukebox, it is laidback, has great beer selection, good pours.
It had been a Red, White and Boom tradition for a bunch of us to gather at a Mexican restaurant on Red, White and Boom and avoid the insanity downtown while creating our own insanity there. It’s great to keep the tradition going while creating some staged insanity.
