Full steam(roller) ahead for road-construction season

The state budget battles spilling into Downtown streets won't have an effect this spring and summer on central Ohio highways.

In fact, the Ohio Department of Transportation will spend double its yearly average on roadwork in the region, thanks to the scheduled start of a long-planned rebuilding of I-70/71 through Downtown in June.

I'm happy to see the reconstruction of the 70/71 split. It's sad though how education budgets have been cut and transportation budget's haven't as much as education has.

Another example of our "fair" government at work.

The 3rd and 4th street bridges definitely needed some attention. A stitch in time saves nine.

Everything in the downtown area needs a face lift, all the bridges, streets, and surely the interstate. Thankfully it will be happening soon enough. And I have a question for you Walker,

The ramps at Mound St and I-70, during the reconstruction are they going to put in ramps connecting East I-70 to Mound St?

Money comes from the portion of Ohio's 28-cents-a-gallon gasoline tax that is dedicated to highway improvements. That insulates roadwork from the cutbacks affecting state programs that depend on income taxes and other general-fund sources.

This makes me feel a bit better about those bridges.

Get 'em fixed ;)

Via MSI:

Note that it is actually an off-ramp from west-bound I-70 that will be connected to Mound Street and that is currently scheduled to be built as part of Phase 2 of the project, tentatively scheduled to begin in 2013.

I'm not. It's an improvement over what we have right now, but at the same time a giant missed opportunity.

Im not even sure they released them all. If you go onto the ODOT website they have some plans for the first 3 phases.

Westerville, ODOT plan Route 3 overhaul

The city of Westerville and the Ohio Department of Transportation are preparing for two projects that aim to make state Route 3 both safer and more attractive.

The projects are planned to kick off in May, though both ODOT and Westerville are finalizing details with their contractors, so groundbreaking dates have not yet been set.

Upcoming ODOT Work on Franklin Co. Roads

COLUMBUS -- The following work is planned in the Franklin County area on the specified dates and times. All work is weather dependent; it may be postponed or canceled without prior notice.

MONDAY, APRIL 25
Interstate 70 (East Side) -- (NEW) I-70 east will be reduced to three lanes between Miller/Kelton Avenue and Alum Creek Drive from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. to construct a reinforced concrete barrier. The ramp from I-70 east to Main Street will also be closed. Detour: I-70 east to Alum Creek Drive to Main Street. Completion date: April 27.

Interstate 71 (Downtown) -- (NEW) I-71 south will be reduced to two lanes at 11th Avenue from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for utility work.

This is a really awful stretch of road to bike on. Looks like this will change with some bike lanes.

I liked this from the article: "When this is all said and done, within the next couple of years, that traffic light will look like the entrance to Westerville," Craven said. "The motorists, when they arrive at that spot, will say, 'This is the entrance to Westerville.'"
