I'm sure there's no shortage of opinion about Chad Ocho Cinco of the Cincinnati Bengals.
For those of you who need to get caught up, the athlete formerly known as Chad Johnson legally changed his surname to Ocho Cinco this week, and the Bengals have agreed to recognize said change in all official business.
I used to think he was a good influence on the Bengals, offering the type of over-the-top grandstanding that - unexpectedly, improbably - helped light a fire under the perennially awful team. It was a gamble, because his antics could've easily added even more silliness to a team that has always been considered a joke.
But this... this goes a little too far. The ego has landed, and it's clear now that Chad 85 is no longer trying to fire up his teammates. He's just trying to make himself look better in spite of them. Reminds me of everything I used to dislike about Dennis Rodman. Here's hoping Marvin Lewis can keep the kid in check.

Every report I've ever read about Ocho Cinco says that he's the consummate teammate with an incredible work ethic and unsurpassed leadership skills.
Off the field he's a non-drinker/smoker/drug user who's heavily involved in churches/chariities and makes frequent appearances free of charge for his young fans.
He's no kid, either.
What part of that are you hoping Marvis Lewis keeps in check?
It's one thing to say you think that the name change is silly or stupid, but Ocho Cinco is as far from Dennis Rodman as a player can get and would never do anything to "spite" a teammate.
You are way off base there.

Hm. I stand corrected, then.
But legally changing your name to reflect your jersey number in Spanish is freakin' weird.

Yeah. At least. I'm a fan of his and still thought "What the...??"
He's a goofball who can take it too far and in dumb-ass ways, but he's still a solid dood.

NFL nixed the Ocho Cinco jersey so far -- something about those pesky financial obligations - gotta sell all those "85 C. Johnson" jerseys up first!

I heard that today. I would really feel like a jackass if I changed my name to a number in spanish to avoid league penalties . Legally. And then had reebok say no.

Not to be a dick, but if you're gonna get nitpicky, the name really should be "Ochenta Y Cinco".
