"We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers."
This statement from Obama's inaugural address has conservative Christians in a flutter. Bishop E.W. Jackson stated, "We are not a Muslim nation or a nonbelieving nation," and The Reverend Cecil Blye said, "It's important to understand the heritage of our country, and it's a Judeo-Christian tradition." I suppose these men think that the United States would be a better place if we could simply ignore some religions to the point at which they cease to exist.
The heritage of our country is much more wide-ranging than what it once was. The United States has lots of traditions, including many involving race and gender discrimination, that many of us do not want to revisit. I would much rather understand and practice our nation's ideals of equality in race, gender, and religion.
Obama completely dissed Buddhists and polytheists. Where is the outrage over that? :P
