This may be the worst op-ed I've ever read. Some broad from Zanesville manages to not only slam Ohio constantly throughout her statement, but does absolutely nothing to in any way make a point...at all.

Ah! You beat me to it. I'm still pretty new to Ohio (and this whole part of the country), so I wondered if this was insulting to people who've lived here long enough to have an opinion. Is it safe to say yes?

Oh yeah, not to mention "Zanesville" isn't exactly representative of the state. Interestingly enough, the New York Post listed Columbus, alongside Budapest and Venice as one of the best 5 travel destinations last year...

Yes.
Let's go kick her ass!
KIDDING! I'll just mock her in my head for living in Zanesville, & being so typically down about her state, feckin' negative nancy whiney butt!

So Ohio isn't the kind of state who gets excited about rock star candidates, yet people continue to pack college arenas and faint at his rallies? Maybe she should have stuck to a one-sided generalization of Ohioans rather than try to be balanced. It would have made for a stronger, albiet inaccurate, point.
I'm actually not sure she made a point in that entire essay now that I reread it.

...if Barack hadn’t picked this moment to mutate into BARACK!

I went back and reread that piece just to make sure I didn't miss the point the first time, but quickly realized that there wasn't a point. Well other than making our state sound really lame. Thanks for that. Maybe next time she should try to pee in our cheerios too!

+1
More than anything else, that was the part that really bugged me. The only "opinion" in the op-ed seemed to be that Ohio was really, really plain.

Zanesville doesn't look bad. I wouldn't mock her for living there. I'd mock her for actually putting such a large piece of tripe together.

I could care less if she lives in Zanesville, but don't try to speak for the state from there. As I sent in an e-mail for her, I'm sure people in Manhattan don't want a resident of Watertown describing New York State as rustic and rural, as it's simply not accurate.

The following op-ed pieces were written by Don Pollock, an amazing writer who is currently a 3rd-year MFA student (Creative Writing) at OSU. (FYI: He's got a book - Knockemstiff - coming out in about a month, published by Doubleday. You can read about it here: http://www.donaldraypollock.com/books.htm)
Just putting these out there as an alternative to Ohio-loather.
(Full disclosure: I am also a graduate student in the English department at OSU, and know Don personally, so . . . yeah, just putting that out there.)

This is now the most popular news piece on the NY times :?This may be the worst op-ed I've ever read. Some broad from Zanesville manages to not only slam Ohio constantly throughout her statement, but does absolutely nothing to in any way make a point...at all.

I really liked that op-ed. I think it's pretty spot on. Ohio's modesty is quite becoming, I think. And the fact that people faint at Obama rallies raises suspicion for me. He has learned well from Oprah.

really? Then perhaps you can tell me what the "opinion" part of "op-ed" was...

I don't quite understand your question. I think the author was saying that Ohio is, by place, a place that should embrace Hillary for many reasons, and that if she doesn't win here, she's finished.

wait...so you're saying she needed an op-ed to say that Hillary should win Ohio and will lose if she doesn't?
um...isn't that the headline of almost every paper in the country?
Posted 4 years ago # -
I can't really see what's so objectionable about the op-ed... having grown up in small town Ohio, I'd say her description fits it to a tee. If I'd never have left, I'd probably make the same generalizations myself.
It's kind of a Garrison Keillor thing- his gee-golly salt of the earth practical Minnesota folks schtick doesn't apply much to the Twin Cities, but drive a half hour out of downtown in any direction and you're *in* a Keillor skit.

I suppose it didn't need to be an op-ed. But it seems to have been a very successful piece for the NY Times. I think it helps people from the outside look at Ohio less as something to be studied under a microscope and more as a real place filled with real people with real opinions and life experiences.

Well, that's kind of the whole point. You'd be making false generalizations about Ohio...only you wouldn't be making them in the New York Times.

Dunno about that... what you see depends on where you stand. I lived in California for a while, and from there Columbus looks positively utilitarian.
I'm inclined to put more emphasis on the 'op' portion of op-ed.
