I know Walker is in some way connected to the North Market and I am sure some other decision makers read this site too, I am concerned about the huge use of styrofoam and platsticware at the North Market by its food vendors.
Only one vendor (Lac Viet) offers reusable table settings, but the lack of others effectively puts a personal boycott on them despite me wanting to patronize the market more. I have been bringing a plate and metal utensils to the market when going there to buy a lunch or meal, and kindly ask that vendors put my food on it instead of a styrofoam container. I will not say who because I believe this to be against health codes icon :(, and I do not want anyone to get in trouble, and I please ask that this post does not conclude in such.
Can the North Market encourage or require the use of real plates and utensils amongst its vendors at least in the case of people eating in at the market? Can the North Market encourage or require the use of biodegradable packaging for to-go meals (I think Jeni's does).
If not, can I give two plates and some utensils to every vendor to leave with them to use when I patronize it, but will still not be in violation of health codes? I am sure that the Market's vendors are too short on space and labor to each do their own dishes, so maybe the Market can have its own dish service that all the vendors use?
I also would like to see the North Market to encourage or demand the use of less or no plastic bags for non-fish/meat items, and certainly at the farmers market which is very reliant on plastic bags. Perhaps discount 5 cents off a purchase for every time a customer brings his or her own bag like Giant Eagle used to do.
I do not see these actions as very difficult or expensive, but instead as positive and responsible and a way to increase customers like me who might shy away from the market for these reasons.
I want to congratulate the vendors who do a better job with this and may be able to assist with how that can be a universal standard at the North Market.
