There was some superb chili at that competition. Johnny from Basi put out an amazingly good one, with orange, honey, and a hint of espresso; the Urban Chef guys did one with rabbit and I forget what else now, but damn was it good. In the amateur category, which I'd been thinking of entering myself next year, Lisa's made me seriously reconsider: not to knock the top two (only one of which I tried, and -- wow), but if chili as good as hers didn't win something, I suspect I'd be wasting my time.
This competition needs more awards, seriously. The Basi chili tied for second in the professional category but ended up losing the tiebreaker... and the only awards were first and second place!!!
Great photos! I was sad that we missed out. We hit the Pancake Breakfast early in Clintonville, but the lines there turned out to be so insane that we really had not time to make it back down for the Fiery Foods Fest before running other errands today. :(
Looking forward to more spicy foods at the NM at the CInco D'Ohio event in May!
I have shots from the morning.

CaJohn's "Execution Station" - a series of progressively-hotter sauces to sample

I did a little bit of prep work cutting manzano peppers - the only kind with black seeds

The hot wing sauce contest from a judge's perspective, we were given these score cards to rate the sauces. We got a little sampler taste of the sauce alone, and one wing tossed in the sauce
Some of those suckers were hot! We were sweating...

Ahh, shopping at North Market...
Alexs, is that the "Chicken Hawk" I see in the pepper-chopping pic :)
Yes, I took my four favorite kitchen knives with me. Chef Steve had a whole toolbox of his own utensils.
Alexs is exactly the type of volunteer we adore at the North Market...he brings his own tools! Thanks Alex and KJD for volunteering!
"After five years, they give me a brush!" - next time I bring my own dish brush.
It was kind of neat to work at a prep table where I could look out the window onto Front St.
