The North Market experience can stay with you sometimes.
That lingering, vaguely exotic smell -- the telltale sign of a North Market lunch for Downtown office workers -- would be blown away as part of a $1 million set of improvements being negotiated between market officials and their landlords at City Hall.
Officials are discussing who should pay for what at the turn-of-the-century building, owned by Columbus and leased for $1 a year to the not-for-profit North Market Development Association.
A recently approved capital budget for the city includes $250,000 for repairs at the market. Joel Taylor, Columbus Finance and Management director, said the money will be applied toward a list that includes a ventilation upgrade, brickwork, electrical work, painting, concrete patching and roof repairs.
"It's nowhere near what's really needed there," he said.

I've never thought the smell is quite that bad, but I can hardly object to more ventilation, just on principle.

The smell's never really bothered me at all, honestly. It's that kind of mix of smells that makes somewhere like the North Market seem alive. Hopefully the renovation doesn't kill the spirit of the place.

I love the smell when I'm there...the problem comes when I come back to work and smell like Serefino's pizza oven.
