WTF? :( Just updated to iOS6 this morning. I use transit maps DAILY.

This is stupid.

With iOS 6 now available for download, you might be eager to get on board as quickly as you can and update your iPhone to the latest operating system. If you take a bus, train or trolley to work, however, you might want to consider waiting on the platform for a while. Early use has confirmed what straphangers and bus riders (who also read geeky tech websites) have long feared: Apple's Maps app for iOS 6 has ditched transit directions. The option to receive station-by-station, stop-by-stop transit instructions directly in Maps has been replaced by a process which, by most accounts, is more cumbersome and less convenient for the user, the exact opposite of the mentality for which Apple products are so renowned.

Added a shortcut to maps.google.com to my home screen. Not quite as user friendly as before, but gets the job done.

I heard you can download Google Maps still? No? My little 3GS that could is still kickin'...and I can updgrade to iOS6...but I was gonna get the new 5 and this is why I'm not. Until the bugs are worked out, that is.

You can pull up the mobile version of maps.google.com in safari and bookmark it or add it as an icon to your desktop. So it's not really an app, but you can make it look like one and function like one.

I was really used to pulling up bus routes on the old version of Maps, so it's going to take me a little while to get used to this new way to do it, but shouldn't really be a big hinderance. Just annoying that Apple had to go and pull native support for it because they're in a fight with Google. :P

This was a stupid stupid move on Apple's part. I know they're trying to carry on Jobs' "thermonuclear war" against Google, but when your users start suffering because of it you know things have gone too far. Apple today is fast becoming Microsoft of the 1990s.

Apple is just reserving it as an upgrade in iOS 7. ;-)

Sounds like Google and Apple should be reminded to keep it civil and to the point.

Won't buy an iPhone without maps including public transit routes! I ride COTA and visit NYC too often. I'm sure their next version will have it though.

There's a couple of workarounds. Several free apps for transit riders, as well as the aforementioned maps.google.com website.

I think google is relishing in the fact Apple is getting some bad press over this. Google immediately released a youtube app when the iOS6 was released (because the native youtube app was removed). So why wasn't a Google map app released at the same time? Did Google already submit an app that is awaiting Apple's approval? Pissing match between giants.

The HopStop ap is actually very cool. It adds in your walk time, tells you what stops you will pass, and tells you how many calories you will burn!

I second hopstop. When I was in NYC, for the subways it notified me of any service changes or construction that would cause delays/detours.

Used to live in NYC, found Google Maps transit more proficient in directing me to the faster route the first time. Which is why I would find it really difficult to live without it. Would definitely use an app for it, but this makes me wonder why Apple would release its version of maps with these problems! I've listened to NPR reviews (here: http://m.npr.org/news/front/161591319?page=0 ) with other problems.

Apple iOS6 maps are also a disaster for international travelers. Google maps used to recognize Romanized phonetic input, and easily approximate what street you were looking for in a foreign city. iOS6 maps is worthless in this area.

In iOS6 you need to type in the street exactly in the base language using its exact characters as it appears.

Also the aspet ratios for streets are way way off. Everything looks a lot closer than it should be represented.
