Aunt Madge, it's important to remember that many people opposed to Issue 3 are not opposed to gambling. I do my fair share of it and would do it more if there were places I wanted to go that were closer. I'm against doing it THIS way with THOSE people. If a local company said, we want a casino and we want to build the Wynn of the midwest and we want to put it somewhere that people can get behind (this is not downtown or the Arena District) then I would wholeheartedly vote yes for that.

Right now I'm playing tourist once or twice a month in Indiana making use of their facilities, and so are many others. Maybe it is a "social illness"; if that be the case then I'm terminally socially ill! But I should be given the choice as to whether or not I consider it a problem!I'm pretty paternalistic, so I don't mind telling people what to do, but in this case, I'm not even touching that argument. I gamble myself, which is why I omitted this statement from the Methodists when I reproduced their materials.
The point is that the casinos are selling themselves not as entertainment, but as this huge economic engine. It's no more true for them than it is for Walmart.
Frankly, I'm not a fan of any big chain organization pushing out local businesses, but in this case you have the not-inconsequential added issue of the social costs. I feel for you and CoreM having to drive a couple extra hours in order to get your fix, but it's not enough to make me support this proposal.

I'll be voting yes because sadly I've been unable to find a job since January. Anything that creates jobs is a yes for me at this point. I don't care about anyone's arguments against it, call me stupid and closed minded if you like.
I worked for Caesar's Indiana in 1998-2000 and the going toke rate when I was there for dealers fluctuated as high as 30-35 dollars an hour. Factor in the 8 bucks an hour we made on top of that. These are great jobs. People are going to throw their money away in Indiana, may as well let them do it here. It was a new property at the time and one of the largest riverboats. I read that the toke rates in Indiana are currently in the 15-20 an hour range.
Bash away.

Pardon me for intruding here, but I suppose you did post this on an online message board, therefore wouldn't be averse to a little disagreement here.
That is the most idiotic reason to vote I've ever heard in my life. More imbecilic than voting for a candidate because he or she is goodlooking. More simpletonian than voting for an issue because a celebrity told you to. Wow.

Bash away.Good luck getting that job. I've been long term unemployed and I realize how difficult it is to separate short term self interest from long term societal interest. It's hard to care about the community as a whole when your own life is falling apart.
Make no mistake though, this issue, as written, is a net negative for Columbus, and the state of Ohio. I'm a casual gambler and I have no moral issue against having a casino in a community that supports it, but not having it imposed on us through a constitutional amendment. This is kind of akin to passing a constitutional amendment saying Dayton has to take all the hazardous waste for the state. If enough people in the state said yes, Dayton would have no say.

That's great for you and anyone else with experience as a professional card dealer. I guess that's the skill set all the rest of us will need in order to stay employed in this area.

That is downtown, correct?? You can put up all the houses you want to and people move there knowing that it is downtown ... so what better place that the center of all our downtown excitement!! The other site I would suggest is those warehouses north of Spring and south of Naughten.

by a lot.Perfect, lots of girls just over on Sullivant Avenue who could get a job there!
Personally though, I'd really like a race track going in at that spot. I believe that a race track would appeal to the majority of the residents who live in that section of Franklinton and that's what it should be all about. Leave the fancy stuff east of 315 ... ordinary, everyday people have to live somewhere.

So I got my sample ballot from the Franklin County Democratic Party ( is there a more inept local party organization?) and they encouraged me to vote yes on issues 1, 3, 4. I was intrigued by their lack of any stance on issue two and bewildered by their support for issue 3. It can't just be about the unions that support issue 3. Besides the FOP has been a republician union for years. Where were the press stories on the endorsement, was there a public forum and debate? Any ideas on creative ways to punish the Franklin County Dems?
