It took Rockmastermike and me forever to see this show but it was SO worth the wait. If you haven't seen it yet, you have another seven chances to catch it. The biggest change to the look and feel of Shadowbox Live is the new theme song. No more arm waving and hooting is required of the audience, but we're drawn in anyway.
The writing is the most clever I've seen it, especially in their ability to end a sketch before it starts to drag. In particular, the interaction between CU regulars Jimmy Mak and David Whitehouse in "Dr. Phil vs. The Mummy" had me laughing. The acting was terrific, with Julie Klein completely stealing the scene away from Jimmy Mak in one of his Vinnie the Gooch sketches. I was constantly amazed at how quickly the actors could turn around from one character into another, including a complete costume and wig change. JT Walker, in particular, must have had five different hair lengths throughout the show. The music wasn't always in step with the evening's theme but OH, was it good! BillWho? is easily the best cover band in the region, this time pulling in a violin and cello to strengthen the sound on "Uninvited", easily my favorite part of the show. Holy crap, the dancing in that number! It is about as sensuous and gothic as it gets to an Alanis Morrisette song, and Noelle Grandison nails the vocals while Katy Psenicka nails the choreography.
Oh, and Jym Ganahl makes his best cameo yet in one of the videos. Go see it and support live, local theater. Yes, they're in Easton, but the more they can sock away, the sooner they can come downtown to a space big enough to hold all that talent.
