Nightclub/Lounge/Bar assistance please!

I'm not very familiar with the Columbus area (I'm from around Cleveland) but my husband and I are meeting some friends from Cincinatti there next month for a night. We plan on doing some shopping, going to dinner and then hitting some place for drinks and conversation (maybe dancing if the mood strikes), but we have no idea where to go! We're in our 30's so we really don't want a college hangout. Our friends are gay so we would like to go somewhere that everyone is accepted. We like a bit of an upscale atmosphere but not pretentious (if such a thing is possible). Reasonable priced drinks would be nice too. Can anyone offer me some suggestions?

Bristol definitely awesome martinis and dancing...
Rigsby's for dinner is awesome--great food/atmosphere/more upscale
Rossi is cool but packed, Rigsby's you can make a reservation
Marcella's is cool for dinner too
185 is cool in GV to hangout before dancing and eat casual food

Rossi is my absolute favorite, but it is very crowded. I also agree that Bristol is a good place to go hang out. I always have a great time at Park Street Tavern (not Patio), but that is likely not the vibe you are looking for. Black Creek Bistro in OTE is also great for dinner too. I also don't think you can go wrong with Martini for dinner. I actually prefer it to Marcella's.

The Short North is your best bet for everything you're looking for. If you stayed at the Hyatt on Nationwide you'd be within walking distance a ton of places.

Hit Surly Girl for some $3 Surly Temples.
Bodega for the beer selection.
Char Bar for Long Islands.
Maybe pop in Union Station for a drink too?

I was just talking about Bodega...not sure why I didn't mention that one...great beer selection and all drafts half off during happy hour.
Watch out for the Surly Temples. They sneak up on you.

If it is Thursday...$3 Long Islands at Union before Skully's would make for quite an evening.
Those things are craaaaaaaaaaaaazy strong. Definitely a good deal for $3.

Wow - you guys are great! Thanks for all the suggestions & keep em coming. I'm looking up a lot of the places you all mentioned and I'm going to forward them to our friends to get their opinion. So far Bristol and Rigsby's are looking promising as my picks. We'll most like be in town on Saturday night if that makes a difference.

Short North is going to be your best bet. I like Bristol, Surly Girl, Bodega and Barley's.
Our friends are gay so we would like to go somewhere that everyone is accepted.
Everyone will be accepted in just about any establishment in the Short North, but Union Station is gay owned and has dancing. Everyone would feel more than welcome there.

Bristol is awesome on saturday nights...see http://www.sqauredonline.com where you can hear podcasts, see photos, DJ line up etc. ALL are welcome and have a blast.
For breakfast, go to the Banana Bean in GV...you have to call to make a spot because it is tiny and always busy or TASI in pearl alley behind Rigsby's.

if you are going to be drinking and walking then Ndecent's post is your best bet. anywhere along high st in the short north will fit you fine(between Goodale and 4th), especially considering you have gay friends. but really gays in columbus are accepted most places here, but will feel ultra comfortable in the short north if they don't know columbus.
some people mentioned skully's but that can be like a college bar lots of nights(lots of young-uns)
I've always had great food at lemongrass, then skip over to betty's for a change of atmosphere, but actually I'd probably rather cab it up to surly girl for drinks instead of betty's.

everyone keeps mentioning bristol, but that would not be my reccomendation for out of towners unless they have a local "guide". just because it is kinda off the beaten bath and not really in the best neighborhood.
it is a good place though.

You will make friends as soon as you walk into Bristol!!! I will introduce you to everyone then they will introduce you to everyone and you will know everyone within about 20 minutes and feel like you are local!! Skullys is not a good idea. Anywhere in Short North is cool, but if you want to tie down reservations so that you do not have to wait and wait and wait, Rigsby's. Actually, Kooma is cool for sushi/asian flare and they have a DJ on Fri/Sat. they are next door to Mynt club which I do not personally care for because it seems cheesey and trampy. Kooma is killer sushi and has an underground Zen feel.

We like everything - sushi, thai, french, italian, you name it. I would like to keep dinner in the $30-$50 range (per person).
So, it sounds as if the Short North will be our best bet to keep a central location for what we want to do. Are there good places to stay in that area?

Now that I look back and see that all are from out of town, I agree with you guys. I would probably stay in the SN along High Street...god knows there is no shortage of stuff to do there.
