Hey all, long time reader first time poster here. So, I have scoured all online tech/AVS forums in the hopes of helping me find the right TV, but have become disillusioned to the point that I cannot use the advice on those sites anymore as they are filled with brand fanboys bashing each other for no intelligent reason. My only stipulation is that it has to be 60"+, as I currently have a 61" DLP and am reluctant to go down in size. This has me leaning toward plasma as their prices are lower on larger sizes, but I am afraid of the "buzz" that plasmas have been known to emit, particularly defective directional buzzing like the Samsung plasmas seem to suffer from. Another factor in my search is viewing angle (off-axis viewing etc), as I have small children who watch from the floor and the off axis viewing on my current DLP is terrible. If anyone in the know has any advice it would be much appreciated...Thanks!

(and for the record: i've not had any of the avs-forum-legendary samsung buzz. and you'll have to pry my sammy plasma from my cold, dead, playstation-controller calloused hands. if you're going plasma, especially BIG, go sammy or panny. fer reals)

If you're a movie buff, more important than the brand is setting your TV to the correct picture settings once you get it home. At least, according to this guy.
Turn "motion smoothing" Off and enable the “Cinema†or “Movie†mode, if it exists. ... Plasma is still the cinephile's choice for a flat panel.

Thank you guys so much for the help! It's funny yet sad that after all of my researching on tech sites (several motnhs +), I couldn't find a simple answer re: off axis viewing...basically the extent of what I could find out was that "...yeah, LED/LCD off-angle viewing has gotten better, but plasma is still better at it..", so thank you bastardsuperstar for telling me what I was hoping to hear- that they are basically the same in that dept.
On paper I am really attracted to the Samsung 64" plasma, it's price point really beats the equivalent 65" Panasonic by almost $1,000. But I have the absolute WORST luck w/ electronics, so if there are any issues known to affect a particular product (i.e. buzz), you can bet I'll be the one to get it. But it seems as though return policies are pretty good on the matter, so I may just give it a shot knowing I can switch it out if there is indeed a problem.
Walker, thank you for that link, sorry I created basically a duplicate thread! I took a peek over there and it looks like that is the exact discussion I should be in! Again, thanks guys, you are making me feel better about a decision I was already leaning toward but have been hesitant on pulling the trigger- Samsung or Panasonic plasma!

For what it's worth, I've had a Samsung plasma for about 2 years.
Viewing angles never seem to be a problem. The picture always looks best on the Movie mode, just leave it there. Shows with dark scenes are handled particularly well.
There is a slight buzz that can be heard if there is no sound and it does put out considerable heat. Maybe the tech has improved since.
Regardless, I'm very happy with it.

Thanks Roland! I've tried and tried to hear the buzzing you're talking about at Best Buy, but it's just too darn loud in there....even when there are hardly any customers, just the ambient noise in there is louder than any buzz I could discern. The more feedback I get, the more I'm realizing that plasma owners are quite happy with their televisions...everyone can't be wrong!
