Schools in Del Co will likely start to be an issue in a year or two.

Best part of Ashley: Whipple's Peanut Butter Shakes - FTW! Unfortunately, about the only thing in Ashley is a pizza place, bar, and post office. (Not sure if you have been there). However, you are fairly close to Marion and/or Delaware and decent access to 71. They do have a popcorn festival that is fun to go people watching. :D
rus: I think a lot of Columbus is actually pretty safe for crime. I do not hesitate in going to most areas of the city.

Are there safe areas for a single woman who travels for work and wants a house in the $80 T-$100 T price range? For the past 6 months, I have been helping a friend try to find a house in Columbus. If we find a nice house, the remaining area is poorly maintained. Finding a house in Westgate has been a challenge. Other areas are out of the price range or poorly maintained. Any suggestions?

Have you looked at Wiltshire Heights? It's south of Westgate, on the other side of Sullivant. The houses there tend to be a little less expensive, but are very similar, and I have a bunch of friends who live there, and they love it. (Including a couple of single women.)

Not a big fan of Ashley. There are some sad towns up north in central Ohio. If enough people wanted to go, we could a CU tour of them. You're pretty much guaranteed an ice cream joint and a bar in any given town. If you want a long commute and a run-down town you can make that dream come true.

Safe is a relative term. As long as you aren't into drugs or the gangs, you are pretty safe here in Columbus. Twixlen and others from the Westside have been pretty active here and could probably offer some good advice about their respective area.
As to poorly maintained, I think it depends on the individual. Unfortunately most of our urban areas have been neglected in recent decades for a variety of reasons. Only now is there a kind of reemergence of these areas in various degrees. What many of these places lack in maintenance is more than made up the energy of the people working to make the area better. You could probably stand to make a good investment in any of these areas and see it change over time.
Other areas to consider, if you haven't already, are parts of King Lincoln, Old Town East, the general campus area (various pockets going from student slums to very nice streets), the area around Capital University (don't know prices off hand but South Bexley-ish is pretty decent for the most part), same with Eastmoor-don't know prices, but it's a good area overall. Your best bet is to seek out the neighborhood associations and see what their goals and efforts are. I'd honestly rather be an area that's a bit rough if there is a concerted effort amongst the residents to really work to change it.

I do think that in general crime statistics give a decent overview. Bad things can happen in 'up and coming' nieghborhoods (a good friend was forced to move after repeated vehicle and property damage and sexual innuendos yelled at his wife). Obviously, a family must consider safety into the price per sq foot.
I am all for urban pioneers, but imho children alter the equation.

For some reason, many people let the idea of crime distort their perspective of any given neighborhood. Not that crime should be taken lightly, but I agree with Lifeon2Wheels, that as long as you're not into drugs or in a gang, your chances of getting shot on a corner in an "unsafe neighborhood" at 3am are drastically lowered.

The crime I was refering to was not perpetrated by adults but unsupervised children and teenagers left to run wild. Unfortunately there seems to be a laissez-faire attitude by police in some areas of the city. In his case, no one was probably 'going to get shot', it was more a question of quality of life.
I agree that there may be a better way to keep crime statistics, unfortunately it is an important tool and should be accurate. I think Mayor Coleman has been working towards that.
As far as something like crimereports.com, if you are looking for information (especially on the web) it is important to do due diligence as to whether it will meet your needs. If possible I would rent in Columbus for a year (to get to know the area on a more personal level) before looking for a home. I understand that may not be possible.

I grew up in Marion, and lemme tell ya...it's no bonus living anywhere near it...unless you're way into Applebee's and Wal-Mart...in which case I guess it's a win.

Marion is an interesting city. My favorite memory was trying to get something to drink at the Motomart and two drunks started to get in a fight inside the store. It was the middle of the afternoon.
I do agree that a lot of the Northern (even Southern) Central Ohio rural towns are not necessarily nice in the terms of being fixed up vibrant communities. However, the housing costs are really inexpensive and some beautiful homes (may need repair) are in these communities. Likewise, the scenic views are just splendid (Fredericktown, Bellvue, or just North of Mount Vernon). When I first got my license, I would drive all over the area (of course this was when gas was $1.00) and went through many communities. There is something that still captivates me about a rural 1800's colonial farmhouse.

It was a cute, nice city when I was verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry young and when my mom and grandparents grew up. It's a big pile of craptastic now. Lots of factories closed in the mid 80's, and lots of people just never really bothered to get other jobs. Blech. I go back very rarely, but I find that everyone there is starting to look the same. Creepy.

I had more vehicle vandalism in Grandview than I had in the near east side. YMMV
