Noticed they are beginning renovations on the space with a new entrance on the Wendy's side. Anybody know what's going in there?

kind of a bummer they ripped the pretty yellow tiles off the building.

Oh, man :( I *so* wanted Trader Joe's to set up shop in that space.

I was really hoping this was not going to turn into office space. Trader Joe's would be great.

I'd much rather see a Trader Joe's closer to Downtown. But that's just because I'd want it closer to me.
Do Trader Joe's stores normally locate adjacent to college campuses? They seem to be a little more upscale. I'd think they wouldn't do too well surrounded entirely by students.

Trader Joe's parent company also owns Aldi - the cool discount grocery store. That would probably do very well at the Gateway if it were not for the higher rents I imagine Gateway charges.
I think the sentiment is that the Gateway is slowly becoming part of a northward moving 'Short North'\campus mix. It is fairly close to IV, 'Peach District' and a slowly revitalizing WP. It is a hell of a lot closer to VV then Sawmill.

I just don't see a good reason it should be in the Gateway other than the fact that a different grocery store used to be there.

A lot in the urban core is neighborhood driven. It does not count if it is not in your neighborhood*... ;)
(*which probably means, you think you could walk there - but you probably won't.)

Realistically a Traders Joes close to downtown would probably open up in the Grandview Yard, or just maybe in the Arena District where the failed new Giant Eagle was going. Crossing fingers ...

As the residential is put in place I definitely see the Grandview Yard as the prime contender for some sort of new near downtown grocery.
There is a nexus developing as the northern end of the SN grows into campus. There will be a wider diversity of incomes mixing. I think Sunflower was a bit too specialized and about 10 years too early.
