New Restaurant Opening March 2010 - Gobblers Original Turkeys

The businesses have been closing along that strip for the last two years.
Then the restaurants.

Chipotle, First Watch, the steak house and High Beck have almost a cult following.

The rest is becoming a ghost town. The first two get business from the courts. Grange insurance now has places to eat inhouse. The new Krogers pulls in the people from the area Gobblers is one block to far on a dying strip.

That area just isn't the pull it used to be since the arena district opened. Even Henkes closed. I live about 6 blocks away and I don't even head up there.

Sorry Gobblers, but I think your location is a Turkey.

I don't know about the last two, but the first have parking. that might make a difference.

Just ate there. I assume it was Aaron Clark inside who seemed to be running the show. Very friendly. They were out of turkey legs and he offered me two wings for the cost of one as an apology for being out, which I told him was completely unnecessary. He insisted. Unfortunately, the food was only so-so IMO. The baked beans were completely ordinary out of the can with the exception of some cut up pieces of sausage having been added. The turkey wings appear to be seasoned primarily with turmeric. The smoke on them was odd-it was a bit acrid as if coming from non-seasoned hardwood of some type. Worst was the texture of the meat. I smoke a lot of 'Q at home including turkey. If you smoke it long enough, the turkey skin will take on a bronze color and the meat will have a noticeable smoke ring and will be tender, moist, and fall-off-the-bone. Not here. The skin had the yellowish color of turmeric but rather than being crispy it was rubbery and tough. The meat off the wing was rubbery and tough too. It was sufficiently done as to be safe to eat, but not cooked enough to be tender or to separate easily from the bone and tendons. All in all, very disappointing stuff.

I went last week and they were out of the ribs, pizza and a few other things. I was a little confused about ordering. The menu didn't make it clear that the turkey was shredded. I guess I was expecting sliced turkey. They gave me samples of what they did have, the slow roasted turkey and the tips. I didn't particularly care for the tips, but when dipped in the bbq sauce they were decent. I was surprised that I liked the bbq sauce, turkey just isn't something I've ever eaten with sauce. The sauce was sort of sweet and tangy, and wasn't overly heavy.
I ordered the slow roasted turkey with cream corn and mashed potatoes. I brought it home to eat and somehow in the process of transporting it, things sort of got mixed all together. I've always had a thing against food touching each other, but I think it was actually better mixed together than each of the items would have tasted by themselves.
The staff was friendly, but seemed a little slow which wasn't much of an issue because I was the only one there at the time and I wasn't in a hurry.
I guess if I was craving turkey I might go there again, but typically Thanksgiving takes care of my turkey cravings for the year.

Donna...if you crave turkey again, grab a smoked turkey leg or 12 from this place....sketchy 'hood for sure, but sooooooooo good...they put the smoked turkey in the greens too.

Oh...and try their homemade fried chicken that they dunk in their homemmade bbq sauce. It's stupid good.

I really hate to do this but Aaron Clark the owner will not answer my phone calls so I just want all of you to know what type of con-artist you are supporting. I am a single mother of 4 children and he was supposed to be renting a house for these people so I told him I wanted to rent the house. He charged me $1,650.00. The people never moved out of the home and they never knew he charged me $1,650.00. He is a con-artist and keeps changing his phone numbers and when I call the resturant to talk to him he always lies and says he is not there. I will not support someone who takes advantage of innocent people and I do not recommed others support someone like him either. Don't worry Aaron charges are being filed.
