On Thursday, December 17, 2009 (the 106th anniversary of the first fixed-wing flight), GLBC's Brewpub will release The Wright Pils, a classic pilsner style beer with a flowery bouquet and elegantly dry finish. Named after the brothers Wright who built the world's first successful controlled airplane, this pilsner, like these local heroes, has all the Wright stuff!

Pilsner is probably my least favorite beer style. They all taste skunky and bland. I have some of the best pils in my beer fridge (Victory Prima) but never want to crack one open.

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but I guess it makes sense since they have so many other styles covered. Let's just hope this one is better than their last offering, Grassroots Ale, which was borderline undrinkable.

I'll take an Edmund Fitzgerald this time of year any day.

gah, I can't believe how many people hated this beer (grassroots). I'm hoping they offer it again...it was my favorite non-hoppy beer of the summer.

I liked the Grass Roots, a decent easy to drink summer beer. To each their own. Looking forward to their version of a pilsner.

Yep...everyone digs their own thing. Everyone loves Bell's Two Hearted, but I think that tastes like licking a bowl of cheap potpourri. And I swill PBR like tap water, so whaddo I know? ;)

There was a huge uproar on Beer Advocate's website with hundreds of customers begging for refunds and asking to check if the whole batch of brew was spoiled or if something was missed in quality control.

My father in law manages an Andersons and lots of customers who bought it also complained.

I rarely pour out a beer, but I couldn't finish a bottle of it, even after I gave it a second chance. I also LIKE saisons, wild ales, etc but Grassroots was FUNK-KAY.

Absolutely no disrespect to anyone who did like it though.

5 beers out of a six pack of that sat in blammo's fridge for months, and even he refused to touch the stuff...and I've seen him drink damn near anything.
Maybe it's like the cilantro thing...either you think it's delicious or it tastes like dish soap...

Very odd. Could have had a bad, untested batch. I bought the Grass Roots several times over the summer, even had some available at my wedding - it all disappeared with no complaints.

In response, the Brazilian Brewing Company argued that pilsner is not considered a real beer by international standards. BBC then announced that its new libation, the Santos-Dumont Lager, will hit store shelves on Monday, Dec. 21.

If you liked Grassroots go buy some Saison Dupont from any decent beer retailer. Now THAT is a proper saison and one of the best beers in the world.

No offense taken, I was just surprised by how many people who tried thought I was trying to kill them or something. I'm not a pilsner fan, but I will keep my eyes peeled for more saisons...if there are no super hoppy ales that distract me.

Great Lakes Christmas Ale is a decent drink though...not as good as Barley's but close

GL Christmas Ale is pretty good, but I agree Barley's is better. I like the holiday beer Shiner makes too. And I need to find the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale I had in Cinci last week. Yum.

Wait a second, our very own Barley's micro brew has concocted something better than GL Christmas Ale? I will have to try this.

side note: I am not on the Bell's Two Hearted Ale fan wagon. Also, IPA's, double hops IPA's, to me = gross. When did IPA's become all the rage? You can't swing a dead cat in Bob's Bar w/out hitting dozens of IPA's on tap. Bleh.
