Saw there's a new diner that says "Opening soon" in front of it in the little storefront kind of diagonal across the street from The St. James Tavern on N. 4th. It looks like it's very close to opening. Anyone have any details?

Awesome! I've not seen it but that's great news. Michelle (SJT) probably knows what's going on, hopefully she can fill us in.

I think its a hookah bar. I spotted the sign last week on my way back from Cookie Cravings. Driving by Tuesday night their Open sign was lit, but I didn't stop in to check it out.

I heard they will have sandwiches and soups.

Hopefully it doesn't attract crime/a bad crowd like the Gypsy Cafe on High seems to sometimes.

The former gas and service station is indeed a hookah bar with light food options, like spinach and ground lamb pastries and baklava, and tasty beverages including Turkish coffee and sage tea.
To my delight, I was approached by Tayseer, one of the proprietors of Village Cafe and Hookah, on my way to SJT. He saw me taking photos and invited me inside to chat, and introduced me to his partner Toni. During our conversation, I was offered coffee, tea and baklava, as we talked about business in Columbus, local resources and social media.
These are great people, who converted a former dead space into a really comfortable environment. While they are are not able to cook or grill on the premisses now, I encouraged them to set up an outdoor grill and offer Jordanian specialties, including grilled lamb and fish. So....look forward for more to come!

Gross. What a way to welcome a couple to an area that could use a little vibrancy. I hope they didn't read this on CU today, as they are new to this site. You should be ashamed of yourself. Hopefully you are more respectful of the new business owners in Merion Village, an area experiencing it's own rebirth.

Katie and I live pretty much right across the street, and I've been joking that I won't go in until they put their name on the building, haha.
But thanks for the pics and info! I'll try and stop in soon. I'd love for them to succeed, we need places like this in IV. The grilled lamb and fish would be AWESOME!

Also a close neighbor. I have to admit the hookah aspect didn't really appeal to me. It seems overdone and as @placebo mentioned above there have been issues with the hookah bar on High. However, that cup of Turkish coffee looks great and has me wanting to stop in. It looks like a great way to follow up a snack from Cookie Cravings across the street.

Step in line folks!

Blind or not, it's a better way to welcome a business owner who just spent five figures sprucing up underutilized property than irresponsibly calling it "gross."
Hookah may not be everyone's cup of tea, but Village Cafe is unique for a few reasons. Of the 11 other hookah bars in Central Ohio, they are one of the few that aren't located on High Street. Their unique location enhances two local businesses in the area, namely St. James Tavern, who doesn't sell food, but courts many great food trucks, and Cookie Cravings, whose products would be enhanced by the great coffee and tea from Village Cafe, as dru stated. It would be a great pre or post bar stop to and from SJT for a quick savory pastry or caffeine pick me up, or just a nice place to chill. And I think Jordanian lamb kebabs grilled near their patio this Summer would even appeal to a grillmaster like you, snarf, and could be a hit with the bar crowd. I am excited about what this Cafe can become in the near future, a potential diamond in the rough.
As I said, and Porky understands, behind this business is a nice couple who were super friendly and inviting to me, and all I am asking is that you visit them, and give them a chance. It's their passion to welcome people in to their relaxing environment and allow them to unwind over a cup of coffee, hookah or baklava.
