New Ohio Congressional Map Due, Cuts 2 Districts

The public soon gets its first glimpse of a map of Ohio's new congressional districts, lines that will remain in place for the next decade. An Ohio House panel is expected to receive the map designed by ruling Republicans at a hearing Tuesday.

Ohio congressional map could send Kilroy back to Washington

Former Democratic congresswoman Mary Jo Kilroy is emerging as a likely candidate for a new U.S. House seat in Franklin County being created by Ohio Republicans.

The district, which is to include most of the Democratic areas of Columbus and Franklin County, is part of a new congressional map that will be submitted today to the Ohio legislature for approval. Because Republicans control both the Senate and House, the map is all but certain to win quick approval.

House Committee Readies For Redistricting Vote

An Ohio House committee is expected to vote Wednesday on a Republican-backed plan for remapping the state’s U.S. House districts.

Democrats and voter advocacy groups criticized the map unveiled yesterday. It splits Ohio’s 88 counties in as many as 63 places and creates oddly shaped districts. Among them are a district snaking along Lake Erie from Toledo to Cleveland and a crescent that touches parts of 13 counties.

In somewhat of a surprise, the Cleveland district now occupied by Democrat Dennis Kucinich was not dismantled, and the long-time Congressman says he’ll stay in Ohio after flirting with a possible move to Washington state.

Am I the only person that finds these districts utterly insane?! How on Earth can you say that the people in Youngstown are going to care about the same issues as the people in Portsmouth? Elyria to Toledo? And that gigantic Godzilla district... is that Tiberi's? But then... I suppose I'm answering my own question: the constituents' needs aren't really of concern here.

The map above are the old districts (i.e. what we've had for the last ten years) not the new districts.

Of course they're insane (regardless of whether you're looking at the current map or the proposed new one) if you think the districts should serve constituent interests, because it's about political power and nothing else. I have to point out, Ohio Democrats blew it on this one because they could have changed it when Strickland was in power, but didn't - because they were so sure Strickland would be reelected and they'd get their chance to do the crooked deed next time. Good going, guys.

Columbus does have some unusual municipal boundaries, but even that is no defense to the absurd… injection right into the heart of downtown (designed to let Republican Steve Stivers represent a bunch of banks in the new 15th.)

Democrats Sue Over New Congressional Map

The Ohio Democratic party is going to the Ohio Supreme Court over the recent congressional redistricting map approved by majority Republicans.

The court suit filed by the Ohio Democratic Party doesn’t come as a surprise to many who’ve been watching the redistricting fight. When Republican lawmakers added money to the Congressional map, they said doing so would mean it could not be subject to a referendum. But Democratic Party Chief Chris Redfern says that appropriation does not make the map referendum proof. He says the map is an overreach by Republicans.

Redistricting future unclear

A Democrat-driven referendum on new congressional-district lines drawn by majority Republicans could throw Ohio’s 2012 primary election into chaos.

The upheaval led to unusual options being batted around yesterday, including the possibility of scheduling different state and federal primary elections, forcing a statewide primary to come up with 16 congressional candidates for each party, or having federal judges draw new districts.

And how would have Strickland gotten those redistricting changes through the Republican controlled Senate?

At that time, the parties (including Husted) were working on two bills. One was more macro, the other more micro. Supporters on both sides felt there was enough common ground to rectify the two bills Then party leaders decided to roll the dice and hope for control of the Apportionment Board after the election.

In other words, both parties are to blame here, not just the Democrats.

Former Dispatch exec Curtin prepping run for Statehouse

Retired newspaperman Mike Curtin used to cover the state’s politicos for the Columbus Dispatch. Now he wants to become one of them. Curtin confirmed in an e-mail to me that he is circulating petitions to be a candidate next year for the new 17th District seat in Ohio House of Representatives.

Amid the noisy wrangling over a bill to configure new congressional districts, state lawmakers positioned Ohio as a Super Tuesday player in the race for the White House and made it easier for GOP presidential candidates to play in the state.

Legislation approved late Wednesday and signed into law last night by Gov. John Kasich created a single Ohio primary election on March 6. That places Ohio with Texas, Massachusetts, Virginia and eight other states in a delegate-rich conglomerate that could potentially determine the Republican presidential nomination.

Kasich’s signature established boundaries for 16 new congressional districts — a loss of two — for the rest of the decade and wiped out a second Ohio primary that had been scheduled for June 12 at an additional cost of $15 million.

Mary Jo Kilroy’s plan to run for Congress in the new Franklin County district has been thrown a curve. The map approved Wednesday by Ohio lawmakers moves the former congresswoman to a new district.

Mary Jo Kilroy’s Clintonville home is not included in the new 3rd Congressional District. Instead, she will be in the 12th congressional district, a seat now held by long-time GOP Congressman Pat Tiberi of Genoa Township.

Celeste, who lives in Grandview Heights, will remain in the 3rd District. However, the majority of Grandview Heights will not. As the map was drawn earlier this year, most of Grandview Heights was included in the new district. But now only about 800 homes will remain in it.

Ohio GOP pushes through heavily Republican redistricted map

Amid requests for corruption investigations and allegations of Republican fraud, Ohio Democrats decided to cave to the GOP earlier than expected in a vote Wednesday night, accepting a heavily Republican congressional reapportionment map, in part to avoid an expensive two-date primary in March. The second primary would have cost taxpayers $15 million, one of the main reasons Democrats offered for giving up the fight.
