I truly have nothing personal against anyone or any part of the Liz Lessner empire.
The first independently owned restaurant my wife and I ever visited in Columbus was Betty's, and we continue to return there on a regular basis because we enjoy the food, atmosphere, and proximity to a Jeni's Ice Cream.
At the pleading of the CU community (due to my comments about Hipsters and Surly Girl on another thread and my post above) I suppose I'll shed some light on my attitude.
I was really pumped for the opening of Surly Girl until I actually went in and tried the food. What we liked about Betty's was that it is a package deal: the food is good, the atmosphere is good (when you can get a seat) and it seemed no frills. Just genuine. You don't get that at Surly Girl; what you get is the Lessner "reputation" with eclectic (read 'over-the-top and ugly') decor. Then she expanded into the Tip Top which I feel the same about after a few visits. I don't buy into the Sweet Potato fries gimmic, and the atmosphere there was billed as being exciting because it's Ohio-centric but I think it's dark and drab.
All I'm trying to say is that not everything she touches is magical. Quite frankly, my opinion is that she's making a buck and all the while in the newspapers and press releases and on this board as some sort of populist. She doesn't open these businesses to fulfill any needs of the community. She does it to make money, punk rock aerobics and all. She's fantastic at finding opportunities and bringing in the green so long as there is cheap beer on tap and a theme that people will buy into. Period. She's not a patron saint of business; unless you enjoy getting off your bicycle for a cheap beer and post on the CU.
With regards to this thread in particular, if she was to open a grocery store I'm not going to sit back and say "ooh la la! The food at Betty's is so delicious that her Quickie Mart would rule!" any more than I would say that Eddie George's Grill whatever is tasty.
