One of the Librarians I work with is starting a new book discussion group and I thought people here might be interested getting involved. The organizer has great taste in books and reads voraciously in a wide range of genres. For her group though she's leaning toward popular, literary fiction (think "People of the Book", "The Poisonwood Bible", "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close", etc.).
If you're a book lover in search of a group, let me know (here or via PMs) and I'll get you the details.

It looks like they've picked "The Poisonwood Bible" for the December book discussion.
Drop a line if you'd like more info about joining the group. It's free and open to all!

This is today.
The group will be discussing Barbara Kingsolver's "The Poisonwood Bible" at 3:00 PM at Northwest Library. If you've read it, feel free to stop in and introduce yourself to Mandy (she's the facilitator/organizer).

I'm sure Mandy would love to have you. If you're interested, PM me your e-mail address and I'll pass it along. I'm sure she'll be sending out updates regarding future meetings and book selections.

Hope you're feeling better. The book for next month is The Kite Runner.

Perfect! I already own this book and will reread it (I probably skimmed over parts where I started to get disturbed).

If you're doing "The Kite Runner" I might even put in an appearance. That book has been on my "to read" list for forever!

Are you reading this yet? I just blew through 200 pages last night.

It's a rip your heart out and stomp on it kind of novel, but it's amazing reading!

No. I'm still slogging my way through "The Monsters of Templeton"; a book that's getting very close to ending up on my "to quit" list.
(True story - I met Khaled Hosseini at The American Library Association's annual conference in Anaheim last June. I introduced myself to him as "the only guy here who hasn't read "The Kite Runner"...". He laughed and told me I really should read it.)

Catnfiddle is right. It's emotionally rough, but a good and brisk read. I had a hard time putting it down last night. I hope you can both make the next meeting.

It sounds like a plan to me! After book cocktails are also an option.

I finished this on Sunday. I thought it was good, and certainly worthy of the hype.
Also, it puts a very human face on what would otherwise be a bunch of uncontested cultural perceptions I carry - and that's always a good thing. I'm even inclined to read more of the South/Central Asian popular canon (The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri comes to mind, or maybe The Life of Pi.).
Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to the discussion. I have to work that day. Do stop in and say "Hi" though if you make it up here.

If you PM me your e-mail address I'll pass it along to her and she'll be in touch. The group is really just starting to come together, so it's a great chance to get in on the ground floor and meet some new people.
