Wendy's testing 'Black Label' premium burgers locally

The Wendy's Co. is testing a new "Black Label" line of burgers in its Columbus-area restaurants. Introduced this past weekend, the new line consists of two premium burgers: the Bacon Portobello, a quarter-pound hamburger with mushrooms, muenster cheese, bacon, tomato and a pepper sauce; and the Santa Fe, a quarter-pound hamburger with pepper jack cheese and guacamole, both on a butter-toasted bun, spokesman Denny Lynch said.

It looks good, but you would think they would wipe the crumbs off the plate for the final promotional photo or photoshop them out.

I'll be bummed if they're served on the same buns as the "W" burger. The old buns were much, much better. I'm surprised they made the switch after product testing.

I wonder if they are going to get hit with a C&D on that. The Minetta Tavern in NYC has been using that name for a while. They use a special blend of meat from LaFrieda, the same elite beef purveyor that Knead uses.

Apparently not. There are countless "Black Label" products (rums, whiskeys, clothes, etc).

I am glad they have a sensible (and all too rare) approach to trademarks.

That other Black Label items exist in other contexts doesn't mean that a claim would not hold up for something specific like a burger.

Having spent an afternoon at a photo shoot, I can say that those crumbs were definitely artfully placed, and scrutinized by quite a few people. 12 shots were taken exactly like that one, and at least 4 different crumb positions were tried out with 12 shots each. I have never been more interested by something so dull in my entire life.

Perhaps a new focus on local sourcing and time to market has allowed them to quickly try out new product lines without wasting months/years in sclerotic interal development?

Or they just have really bad burger project management.

Had my first burger at Wendy's in years over the weekend. I asked the difference between the Baconator and Bacon Deluxe. Deluxe includes lettuce tomato & onion. "Why", I asked "is the Baconator more expensive then?". Was answered with a shrug. It tasted boiled. Yuck. Ever since I discovered a sear, Wendy's has tasted nasty. I inherited a bunch of Wendy's stock from my mother (so I have Tim Hortons & Arby's stock now, too). I am amazed that any of them still have any value.

I'm pretty sure the Bacon Deluxe uses different bacon than the Baconator.

Bacon Deluxe = 4 strips of thick applewood smoked bacon
Baconator = 6 strips of regular bacon
