A great adage in business is you should always make sure your main business is running well before venturing onto something new. I don't think C Magazine is much to look at, but if you don't know what you're doing in the bar business, it can bankrupt you in a hurry.
I think any bar owner on CU can probably attest to that. It's a tough biz!

The "ultra-lounge" fad is about a decade dated now. Like Walker said, unless you have something truly unique to offer, people are reluctant to frequent a place (no matter how modern or swank the decor is) and pay high drink prices. Having a DJ sitting in the corner spinning electronic music isn't hip or different enough. That's why places like Bristol Bar are floundering, and why C&G are ditching Sugar and Spice type venues in favor of more casual offerings.

I would say I partially agree with you. I think that there has been a shift in the perceived inexpensiveness of more casual bars. But, when you really evaluate the bill, you spend about the same.
I think our business changes have less to do with sheik v.s. casual and more with a poorly defined market for us to go after. This leads to a heavy dependence on talent and/or promoters which can shift your nights as either super high rings or super low rings; an event driven bar/club. It may bring short term money in the door, but will never breed a group of regulars; they will just go to the next bar who does this and so on.
Back on topic, I love that location for a bar/restaurant. I told the realtor who owned the spot many moons ago that he should move the offices somewhere else and do a bar concept.

I wonder who the next generation of "out and about"ers in Columbus are. There's definitely an expiration date on the phase of my life that is still bar heavy. Where are the 22-25 year olds going? I don't see them in the places I hang out. I'm not complaining, but I just wonder what it is that they are looking for. I've always been a bar>club kinda girl so maybe it's a natural progression for most to do clubs when younger and transition to more bar and restaurant/bar settings later?
Where do CCAD students spend their down time? Wouldn't that be a huge market to tap in to downtown?

I think that bar is plagued by it's location. Either it sold us a bill of goods prior to opening (rockabilly, old school punk, etc. nights) or it got sucked in to the inertia that is the Arena District with it's really bad cover bands playing really bad songs from really bad genres of previous decades. Either way, meh.

Or something like North Bowl Philly, which has arcade games, a bowling alley, a bar and lots of good bar food.

It's stuff like this that makes me wish I knew the first thing about opening/running a bar. With good beer, a good location, some unique bar food, (maybe a Cleaver Crow/Circus style partnership) and the right games (nothing newer than 1995), I can see this attracting all sorts of cross-over patrons.

I almost said that we need a "barcade" rather than saying we need a "vintage arcade bar", but I guess the Brooklyn establishment has pretty much become the Xerox or the Kleenex of their type of establishment. ;)
And +1 to Catnfiddle's mention of MOMO2. I'd love MOMO3 to open Downtown. Bowling + Karaoke = WIN.
