In November, the city of Columbus, CMHA and Ohio State University announced an ambitious revitalization plan to transform the area surrounding University Hospital East--bounded by Interstate 670 to the north, Woodland Avenue to the east, East Broad Street to the south and I-71 to the west. Poindexter Village and Taylor Avenue, home to the hospital and another Ohio State University Medical Center (OSUMC) property, are considered linchpins in the revamp.

Near East Side Neighbors Feel OSU Is Ignoring Them

The city of Columbus gave the university $35 million in tax incentives one year ago -- provided the university spend another $10 million to develop the area around the hospital. So far, everything has been in planning stages.

But residents with an advisory board to the changes, part of a group called PACT, or Partners Achieving Community Transformation, feel like their voices don't count.

Near East Side residents want say on neighborhood renewal plans

As plans move forward to rejuvenate the area around Ohio State University Hospital East, some neighborhood residents say they fear that they’re being left out of the process.

A coalition leading the effort sent out a request last month to hire a consultant to make a master plan for the area bounded by I-670, Woodland Avenue, Broad Street and I-71.

The Near East Side had a history that could not be rivalled by the suburbs. Not only did the the dollar circulate within the Mt. Vernon/ Long St. area due to Black owned businesses supported by its community, but also by hard working people that had pride and dignity in their God, families, and community! How can a community get destroyed? By taking away the abilty of the men finding and having willful employment! Outsourcing did not just start in the 1990's, but it started back in the 60's and 70's! Way before Issue 5, the White-collar workers watched the blue-collar workers jobs go over seas while it created a vaccum that was only filled by crime, drugs, poverty, and prostitution! It is easy to look at the present situation and justify driving that last nail in the coffin to a dead community, but who can look at how The Near East Side stood tall at on time that has been systematically crippled?

If you survey the area of Fifth Ave. starting around Fourth St., and Go East on Fifth Ave. to Cleveland Ave., you will see one of the MOST depressing sights of the Short North (Black Area) that affected not only the Short Nort, but indirectly contributed to the plight of the prosperous Near East Side. You will see the SKELETAL remains of abandoned factories. Timken (formerly located at the corner of 5th Ave. and Cleveland Ave.) was the one of the LARGEST employer in that area. The same thing about Second Ave. starting at 4th St. going East to Cleveland Ave. I cry for the generation coming up because they are HOPELESS instead of FULL OF HOPE. Outsourcing killed their dreams decades before they were even born! Just about everyone criticizes the present situation of those areas, but who will call out and name the VILLIANS that cause it to be the way it is NOW?! 2 WORDS! Government and Corporate America! the not so DYNAMIC DUO! The Near East Side is a victim of Piledging that happened in plain sight while the perpentrators rally the masses of a justifiable means to the end called REVITALIZATION! Issue 5 was the White-Collar workers/Suburbanites cry to the government to be spared the plight that happened to the (at-one-time) PROSPEROUS Near East Side! White-collar workers are now realizing the inevitable WILL HAPPEN TO THEM! God, love, unity, family, and perseverance! 5 valuable ASSETS The Black Community has long incorporated in their lives that will keep THEM well after the END!

Walker, plz direct that verbal reprimand at the guilty party (murfmurphy)! Now back to the topic of discussion. Is there any out there familiar with the SYSTEMATICAL DEMISE of the Near East Side that happened more than 50 years ago ? I know one of you history buffs out there can expound and enlighten us on this subject.

The request for civility was directed at everyone.

Serious question... is the decades-long decline of the Near East Side that much different than the decline of other urban neighborhoods in Columbus, or other urban neighborhoods around the country?

And beyond recognizing the problems caused a half-century ago, what significance does that play in the future plans for revitalization of this area?

I completely agree that outsourcing is killing our country, but the automobile, cheap government-insured loans and cheap gas, led to the flight to the suburbs by predominantly white families, which in turn, killed the inner city communities.

Interestingly, at the onset of suburban development, many developers would not sell to African-Americans and most government-backed home loans were crafted in ways that make it difficult for the black community to afford moving to the suburbs. It's an ugly past and one that has destroyed many of our countries great neighborhoods.

I'm glad to see they are crafting a plan for the city; however, I'm shocked that this process seems to lack transparency. Most master planning exercises are all about involving community. This area certainly has many assets - close to downtown, charming housing (many need repair), etc.
