Need help helping my mom

:shock: I took my mom to her doctor's appointment today where she recieved the news that she has to cut milk and wheat out of her diet! The milk is not too hard. Most of the time it is listed plain as day on a label, but the wheat... well since I started looking I have found it written in so many different ways that my eyes are swimming! The help I'm asking for is: Cereal. I found nutritional info for Kelloggs, but when I started looking at general mills I started to go cross eyed. Does anyone know of a nutritional site or comparison site... or ANYTHING that will help me with giving her a list of things she CAN eat? Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help!

I did a quick Google search for 'wheat free diet' and looks like a bunch of results turned up. Will look some more for you when I have more time. Sounds like for cereal you are going to have to go specialty.

I didn't think to do it that way! I was doing things like "cereals that contain wheat" and "wheat in cereals"all I got were high fiber sites :lol:

Have to get her some cereal with marshmallows in it and pick out all the cereal. Mmmm... bowl full of marshmallows.... ;)
Good luck with helping her out! Any sort of dietary adjustment like that can be very hard to do. :?

Here is a site that might provide some help: http://www.wheat-free.org They have a section on their website with a bunch of books you might check out of the library to see how they can help you. Lots of them appear to be recipe books.

I found that site too! I looked to be based in the UK. I understand though that a lot of those cereals are in the "organic" section of most supermarkets. My hubby get's paid tommorow so I'll check.

Also, if you shop at Giant Eagle, You may want to check out the Nature's Basket section of the store for some products.

I heard something on the news today about people allergic to eggs can't get flu shots. Not sure about it though, didn't hear the whole thing.

Look for products labeled as Gluten-Free, which automatically means they are wheat-free. Many supermarkets will have listings of what products they carry that meet specific dietary restrictions. Stores like Wild Oats, Whole Foods, Trader Joes will be more apt to have these lists or be willing to take the time to show you items around the store.
Most manufacturers will also list this information on their website, or respond to consumer inquries with lists. It is a very common allergy, and one that is being diagnosed at an increasing rate, so manufacturers, retailers, and even restaurants are quickly adapting and disclosing this information.

oops forgot to mention, with the milk part, it may be useful to ask what part of the milk she is allergic to. Typically it is the protein (casein) or the carb (lactose), though sometimes it can be both. Either way, read labels carefully as frequently casein will show up in products where you wouldn't expect it to be (such as in soy-cheeses, etc). There really are a wealth of wheat-free and dairy-free foods out there, and some of them taste great too!

Here is a response I got when I emailed General Mills about what wheat-free products they make...(too bad they couldn't provide an actual list)

Thank you for contacting General Mills concerning ingredients in our products. As manufacturers and consumers, we understand your concern about potential allergens in the foods you eat. Our primary goal is to provide accurate information; and we believe this is best accomplished by referring to the specific ingredients listed on each product package. This is the most current information for your needs.

products, eggs, soy, wheat, crustaceans, and fish), that ingredient is always listed in the ingredient panel, and also in bold letters just below the list of ingredients. Anne, I got the same exact response from General Mills... sound like a generic response. My mother-in-law has a lot of food allergies and also mentioned the natures basket part of Giant Eagle.
Douglas Black, my mom is not allergic, her doctor is putting her on some new rx's and wants her to cut them out for some medical reason. Thanks for your input too! I will copy that all down. I have a giant list of do's and don'ts and my mom is not happy :)

Not a problem, actually I have a close friend who is allergic to eggs so I passed the word on to her and she is looking into it. :D
